Printer sharing

I have a shared HP 5610 printer connected (by USB) to a Windows 8 desktop, which in turn is connected to a wireless router. I access that printer through the router from a Windows 7 laptop . . . well, I did until last week. That printer was removed from my printers list. When I "add a printer" on the Windows 7 machine, it sees the shared printer connected to the desktop. But, when I choose that printer I get an error message "Windows cannot connect to the printer. Unable to find a core driver package that is required by the printer driver package." I've made no changes to either system except for automatic Windows updates.
