FAO VoG - Christmas Labels

It's that time of year again and as usual I could be in trouble. I want to update my xmas label list for new and changed addresses. I have the existing labels in a Word table. I also have a hard copy, printed out as an Excel worksheet, but cannot find the soft copy. Basically, how do I convert from a word document into a format the I can import to excel. This is so I can sort the entries. Help quick because herself is bound to say "have you done that list yet?" :help:

Doug, I think VoG will be able to help you with this one so I have edited your topic title slightly to bring it to his attention if he pops by.

I'm afraid I still do my list the old fashioned way by writing them all out but if VoG or someone else could tell us how to do this then it would be a good little tutorial for everyone with the festive season approaching.

Unless I'm missing something this should be fairly simple to do:

Select the table in Word and copy to the Clipboard.

Open up a blank excel sheet and paste into it the copied table.

You can now play around and sort out your data as you want.

When you have made the changes save the spreadsheet somewhere you will be able to find it!

Go back to word and open up the Mail Merge wizard. You can now select your data source as the excel sheet you have just created and away you go.

You can then sit back and point out that it is still October and last time I checked Christmas was always at the end of December!!

Doug...

When you say you have it in a Word table how is the data layed out? Is it all in one cell or in a cell one a row for each line of the address?

What I'm saying is does it look like this:

person 1, line one, line 2

NEW ROW

person 2, line one, line 2

or

(where | is a cell boundary)

| person one | line one | line 2 |

NEW ROW

| person 2 | line one | line 2 |

If the former then you will need to convert it to seperate cells to get it to copy into Excel. Word has a convert text to table feature that you may be able to make use of. In Word (XP) on the tables menu there is a CONVERT and then you can do TEXT - Table or TABLE - Text.

The info is in a sort of Word(7 table for printing onto labels. The format, I think, is person CR address CR address CR town CR Post Code |

Where CR is the next line and | is the next cell.

With my present rate of progress Christmas will come soon enough :help:

I think I'm saved. I have found a floppy disk with the word and excel files on from last year. It was exactly where you would expect to find it - i.e. where you would never think of looking. These files were a much later version than those on my HD as well as the presence of the excel file, which isn't my the HD. Seem to remember a bit of a screw up when I was going BB. Anyway the wonderful discovery is a printout from www.computertim?howto which shows in details how to set up the mailmerge facility. Not sure who sent me the links but whoever it was, if I didn't thank you then I do now.

On an associated theme as we are talking addresses I find that the Royal Mail website extremely useful for checking on addresses and Post Codes.
