catgate Posted October 3, 2016 Report Share Posted October 3, 2016 We set off from our little village in the vale of York, this morning, and made our way by all the little back roads to the A1/M (as Google Maps has it) and then went North and turned off to Bedale up near where the A1/M becomes the A1 again. A smart right turn in the centre of Bedale put us on to the Layburn road. From Leyburn we went over the top via the Redmire moor road. We stopped at the highest point of the road and took in the fabulous view over more hills and dales than you could possibly imagine, whilst we had coffee from the flask.. That concluded, we plunged down into Reeth and straight out, after passing through the village green, up into Arkengarthdale where the road took us up (and past) the Highest, most lonely pub in the country (or so the story goes). We did a sharp left at the pub and dropped down the hill to Keld , stopping only to eat our sandwiches, and finish the coffee. Another sharp left on to Angram and Thwaite at the head of Swale Dale and onwards back to Reeth. From Reeth back over to Leyburn, then to Middleham and on to Masham and finally to Ripon before heading east and jumping back on to the A1/M followed by the back roads to our little abode. 187miles according to the odometer and every one of them superb.
