Graham Posted October 21, 2003 Report Share Posted October 21, 2003 I've been having problems lately with shut-down and start up of my XP. One symptom during shut-down was 'AOL not responding'. After clicking 'end now' the system would hang at 'saving your settings', and I would have to turn off using the button.At start up, the system would hang at 'Starting Windows'. The only way to start was into Safe Mode and use 'Restore' to the day before.First port of call, Event Viewer. Lots of warnings and errors, but none that evoked a response from Microsoft.Which is strange, because the first thing the AOL helpline gent wanted me to look at was Hotfixes, in Add/Remove. djohn Posted October 21, 2003 Report Share Posted October 21, 2003 Graham, I think you will find this problem will happen again. It used to happen even before the hotfix was even released. The easy way to fix is to open the AOL desktop but don't sign on.Toolbar/settings/preferences and select, "Fonts, Text, and graphics" Reduce the setting in there from 40 to 5 and save then exit, close down the AOL desktop.Open the AOL desktop, but don't sign on. Do the above procedure of opening preferences and take the setting back to 40. Save and exit, close the AOL desktop and re-open, this time sign on and you will see the graphics rebuild themselves as the page loads. All should now work fine.You may need to do this after any up-date from Microsoft as it seems to affect the software in AOL's web page. I've done as you said, and will not download any more updates!Will try a few shutting down and booting up. I only noticed the problem recently as I normally leave it on stand-by overnight.
