Madrid, October 28, 2003 - According to USA TODAY, the Federal Trade

Commission (FTC) has claimed that last year, the number of reports of

identity theft over the Internet totaled 2,352, three times more than in

2001.

Although the figure is small compared to the total of 168,000 of all

reported identity thefts across the country, the rate of growth is still

alarming, and even more so when considering how the number of online

shoppers is increasing by the day. According to Jay Foley, from the

Identity Theft Resource Center, "Online fraud is becoming as big an issue

for ... eBay and AOL as security is for Microsoft."

The most frequent fraud involves tricking people into giving personal

details. Recent victims include eBay, Best Buy and EarthLink clients and the

most widely used techniques have been e-mails with links to fraudulent

websites (imitations of the original site) which lure users into entering

their personal data, including credit card details.
