Madrid, November 5, 2003 - Microsoft has announced(*) the availability of

the Windows Rights Management Services (RMS) for Windows 2003, which helps

organizations to store and distribute confidential digital information. The

functions of RMS include the capability to define who can open, modify,

print or forward a certain document or e-mail and when they can do so.

The aim of Windows RMS is to increase the security of corporate digital

information, allowing documents to be shared and exchanged, while minimizing

the risk of confidential information leaks due to inadvertent or intentional

misuse.

Until now, the security of digital information was protected by

perimeter-based security solutions, such as firewalls or access control

utilities that prevented unauthorized access to the drives on which the data

was stored. However, as soon as the documents were taken out of this secure

environment, the protection and access control were no longer applied.

With Windows RMS the usage policies and protection stay with the document

regardless of where it is moved to. For example, with Outlook 2003, or other

Windows RMS compatible mail clients, an e-mail message can be sent that can

only be read by the recipient, but not copied, pasted, edited or forwarded.

Windows RMS also allows users to define how long the information will be

legible.

Although, at the moment, only Office 2003 applications support the new

Windows RMS, Microsoft highlights that it is a platform that allows any

developer to update or create new applications that take advantage of this

technology.
