Assembling from scratch

Well, all of my parts have arrived . I'm spending the weekend reading through the manuals but I thought I'd post and ask you experienced chaps for any new-build tips. For example I've heard that wearing latex gloves removes the danger of component damage via static. Is that right ?

No.

Latex can build up large static charges - think of the balloon rubbed on a woollie sweater and then sticks to the wall - all due to static.

The only way to remove any static problems is to have yourself and the equipment you are working with at the same electrical potential.

The most common way to do this is to electrically attach yourself to the equipment using something like an earthing wrist strap.

I should say, though, that I've assembled dozens of computers from scratch and never used a wrist strap or any other earthing device. All I do is ensure that I touch the case of the machine periodically - which you are likely to do anyway. Never had any problems :)

Hi Moon

Offer up the mobo to the case first to see exactly which fixing points you will need.

Just mark the ones you need with a felt tip pen.

Normally in the box for the mobo there is a square peace of foam (for transport pertection) If you have one, place it on a table or your work bench, and place the mobo on to it, then add the CPU, Heatsink & Fan & Memeory to the mobo.

Then fit the mobo into the case.

The reason i do it this way is that it stops a the motherboard flexing and breaking.

Also be care careful when conecting the ribon cables to the mobo.

cpu clock ratio and clock switch both to auto?

Yes. What I can't figure is at which point do I install the OS ? Do I get one HDD up and running , install the OS and then install the second HDD and configure both for RAID ? I mean, just how far along the process can I go without an OS installed ?

EDIT : Sorry if I'm confusing the issue. Yes, I've got the SATA manuals with the board but the HDD's were OEM so I've had to d/l the drivers and Wizard. They are already on floppy waiting for the off. The mobo drivers are on manufacturers CD.

and to get rid of static go for a long run and then put a wooly jumper on and touch the mobo etc straight away,only joking of course,you can get anti static mats to stand on quite cheap at maplins but to be honest you should have no probs.

Perhaps the site could market anti-static socks as a fundraiser ? :D

I have to confess lingering confusion. I'm actually going to start assembling on Monday so I want to get everything clear in my head first. Please bear with me , chaps.

It's the sequence that is troubling me. Let me list it as I see it at present .

Install CPU and fan to mobo

Install memory to mobo

Fit mobo to case

Connect 3 case fans to mobo

Connect case front USB 2 and Firewire to mobo

Install 2x HDD and connect to mobo SATA

Install CDRW and connect to mobo

Install FDD and connect to mobo

Connect all mobo USB2 , Firewire and onboard audio to rear case connections

Fit PSU and make all power connections

Make fire extinguisher convenient

Power up.

Somewhere along the line I've got to install the mobo software , HDD software and the OS. What, whence and when ?

ok set bios to boot from raid,then in the raid bios arrange boot and array, when it finds no o/s from your chosen h/drive stick your 2000cd in the cdrom,install raid drivers on floppy when it asks,then install o/s,on xp I install service pack next then mobo drivers and then other drivers,not forgetting to remove any yellow ?and restarting, and check w/update.p.s dont forget windows will not be able to give the second harddrive a letter till you format it.

I am almost certain that my board will only support two SATA hdd's. Ideally, I would like to be running ' Striping' for performance, and 'mirroring' for back-up simultaneously. Can I utilise the board's four other IDE connections in any way ? Not as SATA drives, but as ATA drives plus my two SATA's ?
