False restart

Now this is probably elimentary to almost everybody - but I didn't know..............

After installing software or hardware you usually need to restart your PC. This doesn't mean you have to turn it off and on again.

Click on Start Menu, then on shutdown.

Choose restart then hold down the 'shift' key and click OK.

Your PC will simply start Windows - much faster than a full shut down.

Taken from the tips in Computer Active.

PS I DO normally click on restart - this was a lot quicker though.

Good one for faster dial-up connection

You may be able to reduce the time it takes to connect to

your Internet Service Provider (ISP). Go to the Dial-Up

Networking connection that you use, right-click and select

Properties, and then on the Server Types tab, clear the

check boxes for Log on to Network, NetBEUI, and IPX/SPX

Compatible Protocol. Then verify that you can still connect.

Most ISPs don’t use this setting, and it can take up to 60

seconds to time out.
