[resolved}-Kinds of RAM?

I have two questions.

1. What determines the kind of Memory you install on your Mother Board.I do not mean Simms.Dimm etc,I mean the ?speed 3200,2700,2100etc. Is it the FSB of the CPU? or is it the MoBo? or what.

The second question is 2 Is there any disadvantage using an 80 wire Eide cable in the Secondary connector? Thanks.

Have a look at Crucial's website - http://www.crucial.com/uk/index.asp - there is loads of information on there and should you want to buy they will pretty much tell you what you need to get.

Ordered some DDR 2100 from them at 9.30am yesterday, postman had it on the doorstep at 8.30am this morning it is now in my PC and making like microseconds quicker.

Always use the type of RAM as per instructed by the makers of the motherboard. It is they who determine, together with the installed motherboard hardware (including connectors), which memory type is correct.

Do not use any RAM sticks that are inappropriate, either in the fitting or type, for the motherboard you are using. You can cause much damage doing this.

Regarding your query on IDE cables, what alternative are you thinking about for the 80 wire cable? The 40 wire type is obsolete as far as anything remotely modern is concerned. 80 wire cables have much better performance than 40 wire, not least being better shielded from EM interference.

What do the numbers in PC100, PC133, PC1600, PC2100, PC2700, and PC3200 stand for?

PC133In order to qualify as PC100, PC133, etc., a memory module must meet industry standards for use in a particular type of system. (For more information, see The difficulties meeting the PC100 and PC133 specifications.)

In SDRAM modules, the numbers that come after the "PC" refer to the speed of the system's front side bus. In DDR modules, the numbers that come after the "PC" refer to the total bandwidth of the module. Here's a short summary of each type.

PC100 memory is SDRAM designed for use in systems with a 100MHz front side bus. It is used in many Pentium II, Pentium III, AMD K6-III, AMD Athlon, AMD Duron, and Power Mac G4 systems.

PC133 memory is SDRAM designed for use in systems with a 133MHz front side bus. It is used in many Pentium III B, AMD Athlon, and Power Mac G4 systems.

PC1600 memory is DDR designed for use in systems with a 100MHz (effectively 200MHz in DDR mode) front-side bus. The "1600" refers to the module's bandwidth (the amount of data it can move each second), which is 1.6GB per second. PC1600 has essentially been replaced by PC2100, which is backward compatible.

PC2100 memory is DDR designed for use in systems with a 133MHz (effectively 266MHz in DDR mode) front-side bus. The "2100" refers to the module's bandwidth (the amount of data it can move each second), which is 2.1GB per second. PC2100 is used primarily in AMD Athlon systems, Pentium III systems and Pentium IV systems.

PC2700 memory is DDR designed for use in systems with a 166MHz (effectively 333MHz in DDR mode) front-side bus. The "2700" refers to the module's bandwidth (the amount of data it can move each second), which is 2.7GB per second.

PC3200 memory is DDR designed for use in systems with a 200MHz (effectively 400MHz in DDR mode) front-side bus. The "3200" refers to the module's bandwidth (the amount of data it can move each second), which is 3.2GB per second.

Sir Radfordin. Thanks you for your detailed reply.(I could not find this on Crucial web site) From what I understand, the numbers PC2100 etc are determined by the FSB of the processor.Is that correct?

MyMoBo is an Asus A7N8x Deluxe and the manual says is uses ONLY Double Data Rate SDRAM Dual Line memory modules.(DIMMS) The sockets support PC400/333/266/200 DIMMS.

My CPU 's FSB is 266. Am I correct therefore in thinking that I would require PC2100.?

I made this computer (although you can see I did not know much about what I was doing but I think I am learning) I purchased (I think TwinMOS)1 x 512 Mb stick BUT I got 400MHz PC3200, which I now realize is incorrect. Is there a disadvantage in continuing using this. Would I not be better getting PC2100 and TWO 256Mb ,as this would perhaps utilize the dual-channel feature.

I hope you will be able to understand what I am on about and hope you will be able to advise me. Thanks.

In the vague hope of getting an education! Don't think I'd have know the answer anyway, if I can't find it in a book or with google I'm hopeless.
