doug Posted January 30, 2004 Report Share Posted January 30, 2004 Been tidying up some pictures for my web. After some image editing I wanted to compress the pictures. I've discovered that when I set the compression in the save as dialogue the picture saved is not the one shown on the screen. To check what has happened I've had to open a separate screen and then open the saved image. Is there a work around so I can see what impact any compression degree will have on the final outcome?Also any suggestions as to picture sizes and file sizes for publishing on the web? :confused: Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

peter e Posted January 31, 2004 Report Share Posted January 31, 2004 Hi Doug,I'm no expert but if you mean that when you choose Save As, the folder is not the one you loaded the image from it's because, in IrfanView, Save As defaults to the last directory in which you saved a file and Save defaults to the last directory from which you loaded an image.As for the size, if you are uploading jpg photos, a resolution of 72 ppi will be OK, the physical size depends on how big you want the image to be on-screen but I would think most people have monitor settings of 800 x 600 or maybe 1024 x 768 pixels and an image 250 pixels wide will be very roughly 3" wide on screen, and won't take an age to load on a dial-up.Hope this helps.Peter E Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
peter e Posted January 31, 2004 Report Share Posted January 31, 2004 PSIrfanview is an excellent free prog. However, I'm using Paint Shop Pro 8 - it's superb. You can get it (with animation shop) for around £50 from almost any supplier. I've had hours on the computer scanning and fixing old photos and improving ones I've taken with my digi cam. It's an amazing piece of software - you can easily prepare your web pics. Also you can get the power suite for around £75 which has PSP 8 and photo album plus some other goodies. It's well worth buying if you are into digital imaging - much better and easier to use than Photoshop Elements im my view.Advert over...Oh, some mags have full trial versions on the disc so you can try before you buy.Peter E Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
