Ok.... this is what we are going to do

Imagine that money is no object... we are going to build a PC from the best bits we can find on the net.

Here is what I want you to do... we shall put it together component by component. I would like you to find me links to various bits of hardware and say why you think we should have it... and the price too, obviously we need to have a good price so you will need to shop around.

If I am building a PC I start with the processor and then the mother board and then a case to fit the motherboard etc.

If you think we should start off differently then say so, but if no one objects then we will go with the processor first......so, what shall we have and why?? The object of this exercise is to get some good discussions going about various makes and models and to build our ultimate fantasy PC!!!! :)

ME MISS !! :D We've got four times the heat with four Opterons so we're going to need a new case design. I suggest that flat-sided alloy cases are wasteful as heatsinks. We should increase the alloy surface area on the inside by means of a micro-tubular construction, about a half-inch thick. This would increase the internal surface area by about 4x and help compensate for the extra processor heat output. :)

No worries. Micro-tubular alloy matting is available in sheets that can be cut to fit inside a standard ATX. That won't be as efficient because the heat transfer interface between matting and case will be irregular, but it will do. provided it is supplemented by an efficient fan system. Any ideas ? I favour an extraction system mounted somewhere high up where the heat accumulates.

Tubes on the inside??? isn't that how they cool those water cooled cases???

Nah, not like that. Water-cooling is impractical and difficult to maintain. I mean thousands of needle-thin alloy tubes, in sheets, sideways -on.

PS. Thinking about a heat-extractor, if there were an aerated cavity at the top of the case, like a false lid with dozens of holes in it, then the air in that cavity could be drawn out by suction. Because the 'lid' would cover all of the case area below it would be more efficient than existing fan systems which tend to concentrate only on the volume of hot air in their immediate vicinity. Lift the case off the desk surface by means of rubber feet and you could also aerate the case bottom with holes so that the pump in the lid was constantly drawing up colder air from outside and below the case. Waddya think ?

PPS. In fact, if some of the holes in the lid allowed you to screw flexible tubing to them then you could site the end of your flexible tubing close to your hottest components and draw the heat away and outside.

I like your extraction idea moon.... but wouldn't having a hoover attatched to your case be a bit noisy???? Mind you, not only would it draw out the hot air, it wouldn't let the dust settle either, so you could have a filter to catch all the dust and stop things clogging up.

The only drawback with that is that you would have to remember to change the filter regularly or else the hot air wouldn't be drawn out and then things will just blow up anyway!!!
