Im getting the dreaded "Drive A is using MS-DOS Compatibility Mode File System" message in system properties performance.

I have searched This forrum and Google and I have not found the solution yet. What I have read looks like this is a hard one to fix.

I Have not reformated in a long time and I need to badly. After the last time everything was working fine. Thats why I dont know what caused it. I put in a floppy disk a few weeks ago and as soon as I try to access drive A the system freezes up.

There is no yellow explanation mark and the drive is recognized under device manager just fine. I have tried Removing and adding new hardware. Besides that I dont know how else to troubleshoot this.

If I cannot fix this I do not know how to reformat using my 98se CD without using the Foppy.

Have you tried to boot up with the boot disk in the floppy drive?? So your system reads the floppy before it boots into windows?

If the floppy drive is totally dead - go into your bios.

Change the boot order from what presumably is currently Hard drive, Floppy Drive; Cd-rom ? to Cd-rom first then H/d then floppy.

Put your 98SE CD in the CD drive and reboot and you will get the option to start with H/D or Cd - choose CD.

It gives you two options ? - choose the install current o/s and reinstall Windows over itself.

I did it yesterday with both 98 + 98SE on 2 separate PCs - both with the same MS-DOS Compatibility Mode problem after changing the motherboards. After its reinstalled, your problem should be fixed - it was for me.

You can then do your reformat ?
