I can't quite see any real advantage.

Depends on what you do with them. Some links don't like being posted at PCA in their native form because of the length and if you put links into Emails then some people have problems where they receive it and the link is spilt over two lines. Just makes life a bit easier for certain tasks.

Whenever I click onto long links that take up more than one line they just connect as usual. Is it anything to do with settings?

The problem with long links in emails only really occurs if people are using plain text to view them. If you are looking at the HTML version (risky) or the Rich Text version then the mail client is often able to handle URLs that split over two lines.
