moon
Few things really get up my nose but peeps describing any difficulty as 'a Catch 22 situation' is one of them.In Catch 22, the book from which this annoyance has sprung, 'Catch 22' was a mythical regulation applied by an insane officer trying to keep his bomber pilots in the air.You had to be mad to get out of flying a bomber. If you didn't want to fly a bomber then you must be sane so you had to fly one. Please somebody, provide the phrase used before this book was written so that 'Catch 22 situation' becomes consigned to the dusty depths of history. Sir Radfordin
Not old enough to know what was used before but the same view could be taken to things like "best thing since sliced bread" - what was the comparison before someone pre-cut your bread?Perhaps there was nothing before but this now provided a way to sum up such a situation. Catch 22 is defined by Merriam Webster as "a problematic situation for which the only solution is denied by a circumstance inherent in the problem or by a rule <the show-business catch-22--no work unless you have an agent, no agent unless you've worked -- Mary Murphy>; also : the circumstance or rule that denies a solution"
moon
Well, unless you specifically do, or do not, want to fly a bomber would you very much mind using 'Paradox' or 'Illogicality' instead ? :D Ps. They're both quicker to say. :D
nellie2
Ha ha.... here is something funny, I have just googled for Catch 22 to see what info was available. I am at work at the minute and sometimes our server won't let us access certain sites for various reasons.... eg, you could get a message up that you can't access a particular site because it is categorised as 'personal'.Well the link at the top of the google page was categorised as 'useless'. :D :D I wonder who decides that?? Aren't I allowed to waste my time looking at useless stuff in my lunch hour?????? :P :D :D I'm going to giggle about that for the rest of the day now!! :)
