juby Posted March 22, 2004 Report Share Posted March 22, 2004 Hi,I have an HP 720C Printer and an HP Scanjet 5300 scanner.Both are pretty old but I like them and they continue to give me good service.Between them they used to give me a very good "Photocopy" service - Just one press of a button and a copy appeared in the printer tray.Then I bought XP and the Copier is no more, neither is the vast number of facilities which the printer is capable of.The reason, the software supplied with the printer is not acceptable to Windows XP so they (XP) have written their own drivers for it. HP admit this.Does anybody know of a way around this? I have a PC running 98SE networked but file and printer sharing does not work either.A conundrum for the experts, but I bet a lot of people would be grateful if you could come up with an answer.ThanksJuby Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Can you see the XP machine from the 98 one? If not, can you ping between them?If you can post back some more information, I may be able to help you with this one.Mr. M. juby Posted March 23, 2004 Author Report Share Posted March 23, 2004 Hi Mr IMThank you for your reply, the computers are networked and the HP devices are connected to the XP machine.The other machine has the drivers and software for the HP printer loaded. The XP machine has Microsoft's own software for the printer. (Note this machine will not accept the original HP software, a joint affair between between MS and HP I presume).File and print sharing is enabled but does not work. Every other network facility does, I am writing this on a the 98SE machine which does not have a modem.The facilities missed are reverse printing, book collation and the copier function.Regardsjuby Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Agent Smith Posted March 23, 2004 Report Share Posted March 23, 2004 OK juby, as your network is obviously functioning, then the most obvious place to look is at a few settings. I assume that you ran the ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) wizard on the XP machine and used the disc from that to network your 98 pc.I think that the most obvious place to start, is that you have actually set some parts of the machines to be "shared". Although File and Print Sharing may be installed, you will still need to set specific areas to be seen by other computers. Create a Directory (Folder) on each pc, and call them "98Data" on the 98 pc, and "XPData" on the XP pc. Right click on the folders, and one of the options you should see, is "sharing". Select this, and click the radio button to allow sharing for that folder, leave the other settings on default, and click OK. Do the same on both pc's. I suspect that you will now be able to see your pc's in Network Neighbourhood.You will also need to share your printer, this is done in a similar way, by right clicking on the printer in the printer control panel, and selecting the share option as above.If you have any firewalls installed, you may need to disable them until you have your network working correctly, then they can be correctly configured.Please try this, and let me know how you get on. juby Posted March 23, 2004 Author Report Share Posted March 23, 2004 Hello Mr IM.Thanks again, I have done as you say, but the problem remains, I could always see both PCs in network neighberhood.I have fallen into the trap of computerese!What I meant when I said that "File and Printer Sharing does not work" was that it does not work with the particular problem ie., printer sharing doesn't work.I would dearly like to solve this problem which is solely related to the printer.If it of any interest, I also have a an Epson printer connected to the 98SE machine, all the progs are loaded as per the HP. That does not work either.The whole setup worked perfectly before XP.I have seen the HP Web site and there is no real clue there.Like I said a conundrum, but there are quite a few people out there with the same problem.Regards,juby Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

It turned out to be XP's built in firewall for the local network.Forgive me, but I do not have an XP machine to hand to give you the exact directions, but somewhere in the properties for the network connection on the Xp machine (if my memory serves me right, it is under the settings for the IP protocol), can you ensure that the XP built in firewall is turned off.Mr. M.
