micken
I upgraded to Outlook 2002 on W2K recently but had problems synching it with PDA. Tried repairing, removing and reinstalling but I'm getting a message that says the administrator (me) has set policies preventing the installation (which I haven't). Anyone got a lead on where to start with this?
Agent Smith
Hello micken, is this a stand alone pc, or one connected to a network/domain?Mr. M.
micken
Hi Mr.M. it's my server that I've got on a home network for sharing a broadband connection. I built it, together with a client machine and installed software on both. Everything has been fine for years but this is the first time that administrator settings have caused me a problem. I don't know where to go in order to alter installation policies. I run Norton Internet Security with AV but as far as I know this should not be causing a problem. Outlook 2002 came on CD with my PDA and I have all the necessary discs and resources for repair and reinstalling.Just don't know how to get round the policy issue. Thanks for a prompt response. Hope you can help, otherwise I might be looking at setting the whole system up again.
Agent Smith
Hi again micken, you don't mention exactly what version 2k os you are running, but when you say a server, have you got the 2k server os installed, or just the standard 2k?If it is the server version, I suspect that somehow you have managed to pick up a group policy from the domain.Either way, go to your admin tools in control panel and fire up the console1.mscIf it is not there, you should be able (I hope) to add it from the windows setup in add/remove programs. From here, you should be able to see exactly what policies are deployed on the machine, and either edit them accordingly, or roll out a "default" security package. The help tool should provide you with the info you need, but if you get stuck shout back here.Hope this helps. micken
Thanks Mr. M. will be on to that soon. Have to pop out as part of dad's taxi service. Will let you know how I get on.
micken
Hi again. I can't find console1.msc in admin tools and it does not look like I can add it in. Had a look in local security policy but nothing obvious there. Whilst in the control panel I noticed that there is no longer an icon for mail profiles, so something is definitey adrift. Any further ideas are welcome.
Agent Smith
Hi again micken, can you just for the record, confirm the exact os on the machine you are having trouble with, and is it only Outlook you cannot install, or any piece of software? Thanks. Mr. M.
Agent Smith
I've just spotted something else. In your first post, you say you upgraded to Outlook 2002, then tried to repair then deleted.Which version are you trying to reinstall. I suspect that if you have an upgrade product, you will need to install the original version first prior to ugrading it again to 2002.Mr. M. micken
OS is W2K Pro, Version 5.0.2195 Build 2195. Set up is without domains, just shared access to this machine as broadband gateway. Machines with access are kids desktop, wife's laptop via a switched hub and my PDA via ActiveSynch USB. The latter application, interestingly, would not synch on Calendar and Outlook related apps yesterday since I noticed appointments disappeared. I had it working perfectly for two months!Confused or what?
micken
Is the original Outlook in Windows or Office?
Agent Smith
Outlook will be in office.Windows comes with Outlook Express, which is totally different.Mr. M.
micken
Hmm, just explored my MS Office 2000 Pro SP1 discs and there's nothing obvious there. Will keep on looking.
Agent Smith
Outlook should be on disc one of that set.If you have the pro version, then there will be a sperate setup for it on the disc (there are several dataxxx.msi installers in the root of the disc, data1pro.msi is the general installer and DATA1OUT.MSI is the outlook installer)Try running the installer from the disc and see what happens.Mr. M. micken
Hey guess what the installer says that Outlook is not available from the installer, it's checked with a red cross. This must reflect a condition on the hard drive that can't accept the application.
Agent Smith
If this red cross is the one I think it may be, then it simply means that Outlook is not installed. You should be able to click on it, and in the drop down box select something like "run all from my computer".This will then install it I hope.Mr. M. micken
Hi, some information for anyone who might want to follow this thread at any stage. It seems that the problem was caused by an add-in called Plaxo which automatically updates contacts details. Unknown to me Outlook had not been closing down correctly until Plaxo notified me of this and asked if I wanted to disable it. I did this. I then started to get error messages on closing down Outlook. I tried to remove Plaxo from COM Add-in but this caused the same error messages to be generated. I then uninstalled Plaxo completely. Outlook worked fine again as did ActiveSynch with my PDA :) I have informed Plaxo and they have suggested that this has been fixed in their latest release version 1.5.I have to say that their customer support was excellent and I'm hoping that this latest version causes no problems.Once again many thanks to Mr. I. M. for his support.
emerac6
Thanks for the info!!! I had the exact same problem... had a heck of a time figuring out what to do. My Outlook 2002 installation CD just said "Not Available" with no other information. Turns out I never installed Outlook the first time around when I installed MS Office. This was the only thread out there I could find regarding this problem. Thanks again -- I am so very grateful. :)
