snakedog Posted April 23, 2004 Report Share Posted April 23, 2004 I set up a small three computer home network, running 2 XP Home machines and a 98 machine, and everything ran fine, had sharing set up just like I wanted, then I ran some Windows Updates on the Win98 machine and now it is no longer able to browse the network. I'm running TCP/IP protocol of course, along with Netbeui and IPX/SPX, which are also installed on the XP Home machines. No problems with the XP Home machines, by the way. Please advise. Thanks. snakedog Posted April 23, 2004 Author Report Share Posted April 23, 2004 Want to add, while I'm getting an "Unable to browse..." error in Network Neighborhood, when I go and do a "Find Computer", the XP machines show up, but I get the error "\\Office is not available...no error information available". Agent Smith Posted April 23, 2004 Report Share Posted April 23, 2004 Hi snakedog, can you possibly remember which updates you applied?Is "Office" your workgroup, or the name of one of the other computers on your network?Probably the easiest thing to do with the 98 machine, is to ensure you have all the relevant details for your protocols (I have to wonder why you have Netbeui and IPX installed, they really are not needed for a home network, and if you have an external connection will cause some security issues) and then remove them. Reboot the machine and set them up again and see what happens after the reboot.Are your IP addresses statically assigned, or do you have a router using DHCP? Either way, check your IP address is good, and that the subnetting has not been altered. Don't ask me why, but I have seen it on a windows peer to peer network where simply changing the IP address to another free number will cure problems like this.Lets start with that, and if still no good, we can take it from there.Mr. M. homecomputeraid Posted October 16, 2004 Report Share Posted October 16, 2004 Snakedog,I agree with Invincible, I would turn off Netbui, and IPX/SPX. Those protocols aren't needed unless you have a Novell Server for IPX/SPX, and a Print Server for Netbui. Did you put Service Pack 2 on the XP machines by any chance? XP Service Pack 2 adds functionality to the build in XP Firewall and turns it ON by default. You may have to disable the firewall and see if that works.
