Modem problems

I've installed a Best Data modem, and tried to run the internet connection wizard to setup AOL. The wizard starts, then the window pops up to say, "are you sure you want to exit the connection wizard?" And the problem IS, I don't want to exit - I want to set up a connection. I am running Win2k.

Can anyone rcommend a tutorial somewhere that will walk me through this? I use cable, so have forgotten what little I knew about Dial Up services.

Hi prctr, I'm not sure why the wizard won't complete, but this may cause a problem. I have to be honest, I havn't set up a dial up for over a year, but I'm sure the process involves using the wizard eventually.

I have been having a good trawl looking for causes to your problem, and interestingly may have found something which is also related to the problem in your other post (although this is a real long shot).

I would like you to find the value for one of your registry keys please. The key is

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\dmadmin

and I would like to know the value for the start key. It should be 3 (0x00000003).

If the value is any different, then please change it to 3. I should of course point out all the usual registry caveats, that you should have a back up etc. If you need to change this value, then reboot the computer and see what happens. If not, then ..

I have found this site, which has a fairly good walkthrough to set up a dial up account.

The other option, may be to download a setup file from AOL (in the form of a .inf file), I am sure they would be able to supply one. However, I would be careful with this, as companies tend to put a load of crap in their inf files, such as renaming of your browser, and setting a whole host of favorites etc. So I would advise opening this type of file in notepad, and deleting all the crap before running it.

Certainly your post and effort have been helpful. I will check the registry, but am not clear on how to get the .inf file from AOHell, nor how to remove the garbage from it before trying to install.

As we used to joking say in the construction trade, when something was going a bit sour, " Oh well, you can't see it from MY house." This applies to my friend's old Compaq, as well. I would have tossed it into the woods behind her house (minus a few items like HDD) and been done with it.

Oh well, as they say, " No good deed goes unpunished."

This is my penance - for what I'm not sure yet. I'll post when it is revealed to me.

I assume you are able to log on to AOHell (as you so accurately describe it), in which case you may be able to get it from their helpsite (I assume they have one). Most ISP's who support dial up connections will have a downloadable inf file somewhere on their site.

To edit it, simply open it in notepad. It should look fairly obvious as to what to remove, but if you are not sure, you can always post the contents here (minus any user names and personal details if they are contained) and I can tell you what to delete.

prctr. You can connect to AOL with one of their CD's. This will do all the work for you and make the correct settings to connect to AOL from you modem but with all the AOL software as well.

It is now possible [Has been for the past two months] to make a connection to AOL without using/loading any of their software. Follow the guide that Mr. M has linked for you above and enter AOL's Dial-up number in the required box then your user-name and password. Your user-name must be less than eight characters long for this type of connection to work.

You will now have an on-line connection without any of the software of AOL and you can set up IE6 as your browser and explorer as your mail client.

It is now also possible to network 2 or more PC's with AOL [Always has been if you knew how to set up a proxy server] but AOL will now offer support and guidance for setting up and using a network.

There are some tutorials on doing this but I no longer have access to AOL, I will try to find one and post it here. :unsure:

The phone number to use will depend on the type of account you are setting up. IE: PAYG or the monthly one.

[Edit] This is one guide from AOL on how to set up an account without the software but you will need the phone number to connect.

What do you guys think about the idea of reinstalling the ethernet adapter, updating Windows 2k / Service Pack 4 / criticals, etc, and also THEN downloading from AOHell their most recent "version?"

My friend would have to go through the payment process for whatever account option she wants, find dial-up numbers, set other options, etc.

All the necessary stuff would then be on the machine, so I could then delete the ethernet connection and switch over to the dial-up. I could probably also run most, if not all, of the setup for AOL prior to switching over.

Is this making sense? Will it work? Am I getting closer? (She's giving the machine away to her daughter, who will probably not use cable or DSL, so is stuck with dial-up).

If you pick up an AOL Cd from any one of the stores that now stock them, it will be version 9. Version 9 gives you the option to install the full program or just the dialler. j.

I had assumed that the machine was already fully patched prctr, as you were asking about doing a fresh install recently. I think that this is a MUST for you to do first, and it is possible it will solve your "wizard" problem. I believe there was a fix for this in sp3.

I had also assumed that you wanted to dial into AOHell as a backup for a current account. As this is not the case, may I suggest that you might like to consider some other ISP's as well.

If you do decide to go with AOHell, then I think that djohns idea is quite good, pick up a free cd from a store or magazine, and hey presto, no need to download it all :D

(1) Reinstall Win2k (to get the wizard back)

(2) Make sure modem & drivers are installed and functional

(3) Load the ISP program from the CD.

(4) Transfer possession and custody of that entire nightmare to someone else !
