error code 0x80070002

Recommended Posts

hi all i have a really serious and baffleing problem. when i boot windows and get to the login screen i get a message saying "a problem is preventing windows from accurately checking the license for this computer. Error code: 0x80070002" i have had xp service pack 2 for a month or two now and not sure why it is doing this all of a sudden

common sense says to go to google and type in the error which i did and came up with this page describing my exact problem http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=310794.

this page is great except for the fact i do not have the registry entries described in the workaround. they just arent there. also my drive letters have not changed so it rules out the fix provided by microsoft. this is VERY annoying and i know you folks are knowledgeable and hope you can help me out. thanks

Hi again trevdawg0, first I need to say I do not use XP, so this information is only what I have managed to glean from my search sources.

It would seem that there are quite a few people in the same boat as you, ie they have the error, but none of the registry bits M$ so kindly say will fix it. It would seem that the most common denominator is a file called oembios.bin, which fails to copy/extract correctly at install.

What you need to do apparently, is to find the file on your XP disc (it should be named oembios.bi_ ) and extract it. However, I am not exactly sure to where you need to extract it. I would have to assume either C:\WINNT or C:\WINNT\SYSTEM or C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32

At this point I would ask anybody with XP, if they could check to see the destination for the extracted oembios.bin file.

Good luck. Mr. M.
