Sound gone in 98se

Recommended Posts

Son's 98se pc, self-build, no motherboard disc (?) sound has gone. It's an AMD and Aida32 says it's an AMD XP-A but on AMD site there's no such beast and not a lot of info.

Tried uninstalling soundcard in device manager but there's no option, just update driver. It won't take any driver from os disc or from M$, :( and list known drivers gives 1 generic which doesn't work. :(

If it's onboard sound you won't see a separate card. The line in, line out connectors come straight of the motherboard, usually on the same panel as the parallel, serial connectors.

It could just be missing the driver file. I use a utility called 'Driver Magic'. You don't need to know any details - the software queries all devices on the PC then connects to it's website and searches a database for any matches. It's been very useful for me.

Only thing is, it's not free. Though, I think there's a free trial of the software which might be enough for you.
