"You know what my toughest competitor is?" Gates asked reporters at a media briefing here Monday. "It's pirated software...If you really look around, you'll find way more pirated Windows than you'll find open-source software. Way more." If you think about it fora a minute Windows became a mainstream OS just because it and its predecessor MS-DOS was easy to pirate. So easy in fact that that it was and is just a matter of copying disks. I do not think that a giant like MS could not think of a custom copy-protection system that would do the trick (or at least make it difficult). The truth is that they are not interested.
