New Ram

HI Folks

Just fitted new stick of 512mb PC2100 DDR ram so i now have 768 of RAM

I now keep getting critical errors

Now i dont know if this is the RAM or my PSU cant take it?

I did have 2 sticks of 256mb before and now have a 512 and a 128

I have an asus A7n266 mobo, Athlon XP2200 Processor, a floppy disc, a CD-ROM and a CD-RW drive fitted and a radeon 128mbddr atlantis graphics card

I think my PSU is 350 watts

Any ideas?

I run a similar set up to yours, but have 2 x512 sticks of memory & two hard drives all running of a 350 watt power supply, with no problems.

Just out of interest are the 2 sticks from the same maker and have you tried the 512 on its own and with either of the 256 ones you had in origonally.

And which slots have you put them in 0 & 1 or 1 & 2 ?????

just downloaded sisandra and it says maximum installable memory is 512mb

Now is that per dimm slot or is that the maxiumum?

Forgot to say that i also have 2 HDD's installed

No they are not the same makers

The 512 is in dimm 1 and the 256 is in dimm2

2 DIMMs up to 1.0GB of PC2100/1600 non ECC DDR memory support

I have found Asus boards to be very critical about the memory they recognise. I always match the brand and size of the sticks when I'm building with Asus boards.

I use Twinmos Ram and decided i needed more so i bought a stick of DataWrite i think and my pc used to crash and restart at random, so i swaped it for another stick of Twinmos and have no probs now.......Twinmos is also a much beter make aswell B)

Took the 256 out and it runs fine

Damn that means i cant take the 512mb stick back

Make sure your mobo can support over 512. Sometimes if it can't it will give you funky errors. Also, if they are differen't mhz, like 133 and 100, you'll cause a lot more problems than solve by adding more.

And, try each 512 on it's own. If both work, just not together, it's not a RAM problem, might be your mobo... :(

thanks for that but they are both 266mhz ram 184 pin

apparantly my mobo does support 1gb, its only a year old

I always use Crucial and I purchased them at the same time.

A friend of mine tried mixing different types of ram and it caused all sorts of errors.

That one thing to make a mental note of guys. Different memory modules may react differently when mixed with modules from different manufacturer or even different series from the same manufacturer. All memory modules are not the same.. some are made using chips from different manufacturer (hynix, samsung etc.) and some manufacturers use slightly different PCBs. It's always advisable not to mix memory sticks although you may still do so and have them work perfectly.
