Trouble is.... lots of people buy computers and don't know a thing about them... we've all got to start somewhere.... what are they supposed to do?

learn before you buy

Did you take your PC to PC World for a 'Health check' then Rebel???

 yeah right ..........no chance

It's a good point. Before I bought a pc I subscribed to PCA. Bought a pc and joined there forum, thats where I learned (though I am still learning).

Computers arn't as easy as they look, but I usually research a product before I splash out between £500 and a grand. I actually did a colledge course just to learn how to use programs and bits.

Fitting extra RAM is easy when you know how, but I know some people who have had real problems when things go wrong afterwards.

I visit friends who's computers are riddled with viruses and spyware, they just complain their PC is running slow :)

Hmmm well I spent the first couple of years constantly breaking my PC.... cos I didn't know any better... but I'm naturally curious so I found out what I was doing wrong and with the help of support forums managed to sort my problems out.... But not everyone is willing or has the inclination or interest to find out about this stuff.

Very true the natural reaction to something going wrong is to call a plumber or a electrician, or a garage.

Why would PC problems be different? PC world has discovered this and is attempting to exploit this lack of knowledge as would a plumber or an electrician etc!

Interestingly enough just recently, in Sydney, a survey was done on 70 Computer Repairers, in which a perfectly good PC was taken for Repair, having had just the power lead to the HDD disconnected!

20% fixed it by plugging in the power lead, and charged nothing.

20% fixed it by plugging in the power lead and charged a small fee.

60% quoted between $100.00 and $400.00 to fix it, saying that the HDD was gone, Ram was faulty, Power Suppy gone, etc. etc.

At 2 of the Repair Shops, the PC was deliberately damaged so it would come back in a few days time!

It appears to be a General thing, throughout Australia, and there are calls for a more stricter control over the Industry.

Buyer BEWARE!

 :D

PCA looked into PC World so called health check and panned it. They introduced minor faults, and also a virus. PC World did NOT find the virus at some branches, and ALL branches wanted to carry out extra additional work.

More than once I have been asked to rectify damage done by PCW after one of these Health Checks. The people concerned refused to take the machines back to PCW in case more damage was caused.

In one instance, the IDE connector to the hard drive appeared not to fit properly. On investigation a connector pin was seen to be bent back and flattened against the mounting which could have short circuited the adjacent pin (fortunately the bent pin was N/C so it didn't matter that much but, even so, it shows unnecessary heavy handedness.)
