Royle
On this computer I have Windows XP and 2 NICs. The first NIC which is build onto the motherboard has a cable coming into it from my DI-604 router. The second NIC (which is PCI) has a cross-over cable going into my PS2. When I first tried this setup, I tried to use Windows XP's ICS (internet connection sharing) to get my PS2 online. This didn't work because XP gave me an error saying that the ip windows needed to share the internet was taken (I guess by my router). I got around this issue by "bridging" the two NICs. I plan on buying Windows 2000 and I was wondering if I would be able to get this setup working with it?Can someone help me with this? Thanks in advance for your help. nellie2
Hi Royle and welcome to WF :welcome: I'm not an expert on this... and our W2k expert is probably in the pub right now!! :P But I did find this article click here there are some other interesting articles on that site, let us know if you manage to sort your connection out or you need more help. :)
Royle
Thanks for the article but thats for setting up your ps2 with a line straight from the router. In my case, I have a 70 foot cable going from my router to the room with my PC and PS2. I do not want to have to wire in another 70 foot cable. So I want to route it through my PC. nellie2
hmm, well you need to set up the internet connection sharing in some way then, and to do that you need to get around the IP problem.... I can't help you there I'm afraid but we do have members here who most likely can... so keep an eye on this thread.
Royle
Maybe there is a third-party program someone might know of....
Scarecrow Man
Windows 2k, as is windows XP is built on NT technology, meaning they are essentially the same inside the OS. graphically they are differen't.I don't see why you wouldn't be able to 'bridge' the connections.Your best bet would be to hook the PS2 directly to the router, but as you said, that's not an option. It's easier to set up a PC with the router running another PC through a cross-over, but a PS2 would be much the same. The only thing is, all the configuration must be done from the PC end. What I would do is, like you say, 'bridge' the two NIC's so the PS2 thinks it's connected directly. I don't think the ICS will work in this situation, because it requires the second device on the LAN to be set up to accept an internet connetion through another computer. Being a PS2, as long as it's getting packets, it thinks it's on the internet. Now, I must add I just got back from drinking at a friends house, so I may just be talking gibberish :D so take a look at this, and as you see, ICS will work for the PS2. Your computer will act as a host, almost like a router to the PS2.Post back if you have problems.
Agent Smith
As far as I can see, the simplest solution here, would be to buy a cheap hub or switch. Simply add that to the end of your current cable, and then you can plug both pc and ps2 into the device and not have to worry about ICS or having the pc on to use the internet with the ps2.I cannot vouch for the product, but switches can be obtained from just over £5.00 ie Ebuyer ExampleMr. M. Intratech
Dude just use the Router as a DHCP server and extent the ip range. it should pick up the PS2 and assign an ip to it that's not inuse my another client on the nerwork. Why use ICS when you can use the router as the "server" and connect your pcs and ps2 directly to it, unless the router doesn't have a firewall and that's what you're worries about? Agent Smith
Intratech, I quote from Royle's postThanks for the article but thats for setting up your ps2 with a line straight from the router. In my case, I have a 70 foot cable going from my router to the room with my PC and PS2. I do not want to have to wire in another 70 foot cable. So I want to route it through my PC.Which is why I suggested simply adding a cheap switch to the end of his current cable. Then both Pc and PS2 would effectively be connected to the router. Royle
Thanks for all your replies everyone, but I found a work-around. It seems that you can chane the IP of the Di-604 router. I simply just changed the ip of it from 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.1.1 . This allowed ICS to work. This is in XP however, so I am wondering if this would work in 2000. I assume it would.Once again, thanks everyone.

homecomputeraid
In order to use 2 nic's in one device, the best solution is to have them on separate networks, and "routed". Here's a link describing XP and 2000 Routing that may help. This may not be an option with XP Home! You may need XP Pro (I'm pretty sure you do), to do routing.Sincerely,
dontacos
Hello everyone I have a similar issue although my setup is slightly different I am trying to get my PS2 on the internet the same way as the poster. I have an internet connection coming from a cable modem to my PC. Previously, I had used an extra NIC and a crossover cable to connect another computer in the other room to the internet using Internet Connection Sharing. That worked fine, however, when I try to set up ICS for the PS2 using the same NIC and crossover cable, nothing seems to work. The system tray shows that the network cable is unplugged for my secondard NIC. I am going to work later to make myself another crossover cable that will be new and not a few years old. The cable worked fine with the other computer but it's been chewed up at least once by the dog. However, I am not very confident that a new crossover cable will fix my problem entirely. I do not have immediate access to a hub, switch, or a bb router but I would like to get this going without the use of an extra device if possible. If anyone has a suggestion i'd appreciate itWindows xp sp2.
homecomputeraid
Using a PC as a hub isn't a good idea (in fact, it will have to become a router). The two NIC's will have to be on separate networks, and the Operating System will have to be capable of routing between them. Not an easy setup. I could sell you an old 10 Mbps hub for the shipping cost, but it would probably be cheaper to get an 8 port Linksys!Sincerely,
dontacos
Okay thanks for the reply. I tried the crossover cable I just made and it showed a connection with the PS2 as connected. However, the PS2 still didnt have internet. I'm not entirely certain what the guy who created this thread was doing, but from what I understand he was also attempting to get his PS2 to work via an exra NIC and internet connection sharing. I noticed that I can connect a patch cable from my modem directly to the PS2 and gain access to online. I picked up a non-used hub from work, but I cant seem to get anything to work with the hub. Tried running my internet connection directly to the hub, the extra nic to the hub, etc. Not sure what else to try but I think a switch capable of some simple broadband routing might do the trick, any further ideas? homecomputeraid
A hub can connect two PC's. A Router (usually a multifunction Router/Firewall/Switch) can connect multiple PC's to the Internet. The Cable Modem to a Hub won't work. It has to plug into a NIC. You could plug the Internet into one NIC, and the other NIC into the Hub and try to share that way with the other device. Please take a look at Networking Fundamentals if you want some networking basics. :)Sincerley,
dontacos
You could plug the Internet into one NIC, and the other NIC into the Hub and try to share that way with the other device.Tried that, the hub doesnt seem to want to give the internet connection to the other ports.I'm bidding on a broadband router from ebay as of today. I figure someone here will know some specifics (or what I was missing) with the attempt to give the PS2 internet access via an extra nic and ICS from xp. My outlook on it is basically, if the guy here got it to work, why can't I? I got to this thread through google, and its the closest to relevant information from the choices.
