Data Recovery

Recommended Posts

HI

I have a friend who kept data on a 250mb Zip disk but can't now access the files. They only used the Zip disk to transport files from work to home, but didn't keep any copies on the computers . The drive is fine as it formats other Zip disks.

I've been using a program called R-Studio (shareware) to examine the disk under Windows 2000 Prof.

It seems to me (novice) that the FAT has got garbled. The above software indicates there are 2 directories and 88 files but I can't recover them. A sector exam from sector 1 to about 10 shows no file names.

wallbash

Is there any hope?

What other software should I use?

Suggestions welcome!

thanks

Graeme

Point of Note here. If the data is important and you really want to try and recover it, then do NOT simply try various recovery utilities in the hope they will work. The is a good chance that this will render the files harder to recover.

I would do as pops suggests, and contact Iomega.

Iomega have the facility to dismantle a Zip drive and remount the disc in another housing to allow it to be read. They then copy the disc and return the copy to you.

Well, that is how they used to do it - I know - I've used them.

If Iomega can't do it then the chances are no-one can so, apart from the risk of doing it yourself, you would most likely be wasting your time.

Best bet, contact manufacturer. May cost a bit, but it will work, unless it's beyond repairs

If it was the disc that was faulty, the service was free. A charge was made for retrieving data from damaged discs.

I should point out that it was some years ago when I used this service so the details may have changed now.
