IDE to S-ATA

Installed a new mobo today ( Abit NF7-S v2 ) and with it came some bits and bobs to upgrade my HD to to a S-ATA drive.

Can I just plug it in to my existing drive ( did a repair install) or does it have to be on a new ( i.e. formatted fresh drive) one?

What are the benefits of S-ATA over IDE?

SATA will give you better performance when moving large files. SATA cables are much smaller and thus allow for better airflow and cooling within the case.

You plug the SATA into an expansion card, and the IDE into a free IDE slot on the motherboard.

You can set up which to boot from either in bios, or if not, the expansion card probably has a bios on it to boot from. What kind of bits do you have?
