-pops-
Welcome Windows Forum :) How are you trying to connect to Windows update? Through Help & Support or through I.E?If one is not doing it, try the other.Regarding Java, try loading it from http://www.java.com/en/index.jsp
brezz
hi cheersrite i tried both ie and help and support but it just wont connect. as for the java thing that wont download either. i think i might know what the problem is but i need advice to whether it is or not. i just discovered that my AMD machine has a dell version of xp installed, could this be the problem and is this a bad thing?cheers brezz
-pops-
I take it, then, that the machine is not Dell but the WXP is the Dell version? If that is the case, I would think that your problems could be over by installing a "real" version of XP if you can. That way, you should be then able to download and install anything you want and not what Mr Dell thinks you should or should not have :) It does still seem odd, though, that you are unable to connect to these very widely used websites. Scarecrow Man
If it's an OEM, which usually is from a manufacturer, options may have been left out. If you can install a full version of XP, then do. If not, we'll try to sort you out. Can you get to http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ or http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
brezz
well i havent got another xp disk and i cant get to any microsoft site. http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ doesnt load and http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ directs to V5 and then doesnt load. -pops-
Am I correct in my assumption that you have a Dell OEM version of WXP installed in a non-Dell machine? What I'm thinking is that Dell use nonstandard hardware in their machines and it may just be that there is a conflict somewhere that is preventing you accessing these sites. Odd, I know but, that's all I can think of.
brezz
rite ive just done that and still no joy. is there not a way of doing it without another disk, like installing drivers from amd or something like or will that not work? Scarecrow Man
Windows update stores files somewhere... Usually a CAB file. Does anyone know where this is and if it's safe to delete (I think it just gets downloaded again anyways when you go to windows update)
