lemondrop
Hello, Can any one help me? I recently did an update of service pack 2 for Windows ME. Now my computer does not reconise either my dvd player or my rewriter. It is like they dont exist. I have got my friends son to try to do it for me and we even took the componts out of my computer and into his, where they worked. we replaced all the wiiring and also removed the update and the dvd player started working but the next morning they were both not functioning again. The dvd player drawer will open and the discs can be heard but there is no way to play them, when I open 'my computer' there is no icon for the dvd player or the rewriter. The rewriter doesnt work, even to the extent of not being able to open the drawer. The little light doesnt come on either drawer when I switch on the computer. Sorry I am not technical minded and may have used the wrong words to describe the components. Only my floppy disc drive seams to be working. I have tried going back to a restore point before all this but it has made no difference. It is driving me nuts.

lemondrop
OK. I assume you mean Windows XP SP2, not ME?What brand of CD/DVD drives do you have? Sony, Samsung, etc.Hello. Thank you for replying to my inquiry. I deffinately have Millenium Edition. I know the serial number of the rewriter is Phillips CDD 4801/65. My computer is a Packard Bell and is about 4-5 years old. The other device is Generic ide disc type 47. Whatever that means! Sorry to be so vague but I have only had a computer for under 2 years. Any advice would be welcome, THANKS. Scarecrow Man
I'm quite confused when you say Windows ME SP2.check here http://www.microsoft.com/windowsme/support...dingdrivers.aspand system restore doesn't work? Try an audio CD, and a DATA CD, and a DVD perhaps. let us know what happens with these.
lemondrop
Hello, I am sorry about that, my son told me that was what I had installed, but I have just gone into the history of my updates and it is not there, so I guess he must be wrong. This is so confusing! The fact remains that neither my DVD player or my rewriter is working and there doesn't seem to be a way of accessing them on my computer and I don't know what to do. There must be a problem with the software rather than the hardware if they work when placed in another computer. It is like the dont exist at all. I have tried a search for new hardware and it come up none found, I have tried going to the earliest restore point I could and that did not resolve it. I am not sure what else I can do. Thank you for any help you can give.
djohn
It sounds to me as though somehow they have been disabled in the BIOS. This will explain why the drawers will open because of the power connection but they will not show up in "My Computer" or play.Boot your PC and tap away at the delete key, the BIOS display will come up on screen, use your keyboard arrow keys to move around and the enter key to open any menu, Esc key to close. See if the drives are enabled from there. If not do so then exit with the esc key and say yes to save the changes, reboot and they should work.
