107606
Hi,I have Windows 98 SE on my computer and would like to upgrade to XP. I want to make sure that I'm ok to run it on my computer. I have a 1 ghz celeron (fans not turning so need to replace (?), looks as if it hasnt been working for some time) and only 128mb RAM at the mo. I'm looking to put upto 512 mb in.The reason I want to change is for the hell of it AND my Win98 won't shut down even after a reinstall, so hopefully XP will work properly?Any suggestion, comments, or anything appreciated!!All the best,JJ

-pops-
Tarting up an old machine to look like, or do, something it wasn't designed for is almost always doomed to failure. If you go ahead with this you will find that you get one bit working but then another bit isn't capable. Replace that and then a third bit lets you down. Replace that one and- - - - - . Get the idea? The result will likely be at the end an effectively new machine and a heap of junk discarded from your attempts to get the old one going.I suggest that to avoid disappointment later, give up this idea. Redhat
Insert the XP disk into you cd-rom drive. If the XP window appears, click "Check system compatiblity".If not : Start > Run > type (without quotes) "d:\i386\winnt32.exe /checkupgradeonly" It should see if your system is ready for Windows XP :)
andsome
Almost ALL the troubles with XP seen on this and other forums, occur after upgrading an old machine. I don't honestly think that many people have had trouble with a purpose built machine with XP installed from new.
107606
So the general idea is not to try it at all? Just get a new computer? Thats a very expensive suggestion!
moon
Not necessarily . There are some good mobos at around thirty quid, fast cpus at around fifty, fast drives at around forty and you'll have fun shopping. :) The best thing to do with the 98 box is to format it and get it running properly rather than abandoning it without knowing what was wrong with it. You can pass it on to an old geezer ( ) and propogate the revolution.
-pops-
So the general idea is not to try it at all? Just get a new computer? Thats a very expensive suggestion!Quite possibly much cheaper in the end when all the things in my post (above) have happened.Stay with you current setup for now and start saving for a new machine. You may find it's not as expensive as you thought as prices are coming down all the time.

107606
Well the crux of the issue is that my current set up aint working as it should. Only just got it to shut down properly by reinstalling windows, but i still cant start IE (see other posts)...
moon
I wish I couldn't start IE. It's the cause of all my 98SE problems. I've just downloaded Firefox and I use that instead. It's a lot like IE except it doesn't suck. :D
107606
Firefox? What is this? Where is this?
moon
It's a freeware browser. At the risk of annoyance by duplication you can get it , or another browser such as Opera, from a PC magazine cover disc.
107606
I see, and it's better than IE? Which has really started to annoy me. If I can get connected again through Firefox, is it safe to remove IE or does it stay there forever, or indeed is it impossible to remove it? Isnt it weird how people (i.e. me) completely forget that there are other products besides Mircosoft ones out there! Im hoping that I will now be able to get my computer internet connection up and running again.

-pops-
Don't try and remove IE - you can cause much mischief doing that.Just ignore it.I've been using Firefox as my main browser for many months now and wouldn't be without it.
