Chris Posted September 23, 2004 Report Share Posted September 23, 2004 Here's a sobering thought for about 300 million Windows users worldwide: If you aren't running Windows XP, you're going to be out of luck when it comes to getting the most recent security updates and patches. That news comes courtesy of Microsoft, which revealed this week that it will deliver new security features, such as the Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) improvements in XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), only to XP users. Microsoft says that about 300 million people use XP, and that those users make up about half of the overall Windows user base. Although I reported earlier that Microsoft doesn't plan to support XP SP2 improvements for Windows 2000 users, the company verified this week that it also won't support other older Windows versions with those fixes. "We do not have plans to deliver Windows XP SP2 enhancements for Windows 2000 or other older versions of Windows," the company said in a statement issued yesterday. "The most secure version of Windows today is Windows XP with SP2. Chris Posted September 24, 2004 Author Report Share Posted September 24, 2004 Compare this to say XX Motor Company, a 1983 XX Model, you can no longer get "Parts" for, so you have to go to a scrapyard to replace parts. Or if you can get parts from XX Motor Company they will cost you xx amount.Also this car by todays standards has very poor safety standards....Now put this on top of Microsoft and jungle it about.Old operating system [old car].More users on XP than older os's.XP more stable and secure [to a point] than older os's.Microsoft withdrew support for...98 didn't they? So why should they continue [with added cost?] supply updates for out of date software [comparing it with newer software]?However were only talking about a browser here, nothing more. I think alot of the talk of Microsoft's browser exploits has been....taken a little OTT. I still use IE and have no trouble.If you buy a computer be prepared for it to be out of date pretty soon - hardware and software. 98 etc still do what they have always done. It's hell trying to get parts for an old Austin Ruby these days. :D I still use Windows 98SE, My sons are on XP and they have had no end of trouble with it, but, that's them. I know a lot of people are using XP and love it. On a personal note though I wouldn't go over to XP until it is totally necessary to do so as from what I've seen of it I don't like the layout and I think I'm getting a bit long in the tooth to start learning a new OS again. I too still use IE and have never had any bother with it but I do keep Firefox on standby in case of any bother.
