I followed the info on the link you pointed me to and typed in

regsvr32 C:\winnt\system32\mmcndmgr.dll

After the first error, I got a new copy of the dll file from a friend

with a working w2k machine. After copying over his file I then get

this error when I ran the command again:

LoadLibrary("C:\winnt\system32\mmcndmgr.dll")failed - The specific module could not be found.

I triple checked that the file is in fact there and is named correctly and of

a decent size (1,128,960 bytes)

mrfusion... my thoughts are that perhaps it is time to attempt a repair of your o/s using the recovery console. If you do this I think you will need to re-install your service packs.. but at least all your data will be intact.

Could you hang on for an opinion from one of our W2K people as it has been a while since I used W2K!

Before you do the repair, instead of typing in

regsvr32 C:\winnt\system32\mmcndmgr.dll

try

regsvr32 %windir%\system32\mmcndmgr.dll

If that doesn't work then go for the repair, I've been reliably informed that the proceedure is the same as xp so you might find Powerless's guide useful see here

When doing a repair all your programs and docs should be intact... but it is always a good idea to back up anything important just in case!

Let us know how you get on! ;)

:dontgetit:

Well, I created some boot floppies and ran the win2K

repair. Once it finished that and rebooted I now get a blue

screen of death after windows tries to start (when the little

tick marks move across the bottom of the screen).

The BOD says:

Inaccessible boot device.

I can not longer get into my machine. And I can't get to a

command prompt to run chkdsk /f

There doesn't appear to be a smiley icon of someone tearing their

hair out and crying........

Ok, I was finally able to get a command line, I got to the C: drive

and I followed your advice:

...at the command prompt, type 'fixboot' and 'fixmbr' without the ''

I ran both of them and then rebooted the machine and I still

get the inaccessible_boot_device when I try and start windows.
