When attempting to log in at the welcome screen it immediately logs out. The welcome screen was set to be skipped at start up.Earlier that day...:Norton antivirus 2005 was installed. It scanned the computer and found a few threats. The threats were deleted through norton. Then msconfig was run to disable all threats when the computer started up as well as unreconized programs.What is the best way to fix this problem without having to lose all of my files? Click safe mode, then follow these instructions:Access System Restore through Help and Support. To access the System Restore Wizard, click Start, and then click Help and Support. Click Performance and Maintenance, click Using System Restore to undo changes, and then click Run the System Restore Wizard. While the computer is in safe mode, System Restore does not create any restore points. Therefore, you cannot undo a restoration that you performed when the computer was in safe mode. You can use System Restore to restore your computer to any restore point while in safe mode. If you cannot start the computer in standard mode, you can use System Restore to restore to a time when you could start the computer without errors. To restore to a time when your computer started without errors, select a restore point as close to the time you remember it last started without errors. If System Restore is suspended because of insufficient disk space, you cannot enable it by making more disk space available while in safe mode. I got this from somewhere but I can't remember where now! :( Sometimes when you install a program or driver, it might render XP unbootable. If your computer won't boot into the operating system normally, you might be able to boot into Safe Mode and use System Restore to go back to a previous restore point to fix the problem. But what if you can't even boot into safe mode? Then you need to start the System Restore tool from the command line. Here's how: When booting your computer, press F8 to bring up a boot menu Select Safe Mode with Command Prompt Select the operating system to start (if you have multiple operating systems installed) Log on with an account that is a member of the administrators group At the command prompt, type %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe Press Enter This will start the "Welcome to System Restore" screen.
