ruthlessGravity Posted October 15, 2004 Report Share Posted October 15, 2004 I received a Windows XP Home Edition Reinstallation CD with my new Dell Desktop a few months ago. In addition, I received a free version of Windows XP Professional from my university (GA Tech). I installed the Professional copy on a different computer of mine on my old campus but now I want to switch the two operating systems. I want XP professional on my new computer and the XP Home edition on my older computer. Will installing a ‘Reinstallation Windows CD’ be a problem with my other computer. nellie2 Posted October 15, 2004 Report Share Posted October 15, 2004 If your Reinstallation Windows CD is the same as what we call a recovery CD here in the UK then I think you may have a problem.When a PC is sold with Windows on it the purchaser is issued with a recovery CD that will restore the computer back to the state it was in when it was sold. The recovery CD isn't the full version of windows. All the system files are stored on a hidden partition on the hard drive that the recovery CD accesses when doing the restore. Chris Posted October 15, 2004 Report Share Posted October 15, 2004 You could try and make a Windows CD.You'll need an i386 folder and a few other files...No experience with DELL so i don't know what setup they have, if you can gain access to the partition see what folders you can see likewise with the CD.But...You will run into activation problems if the CD "worked". Kirk Posted October 30, 2004 Report Share Posted October 30, 2004 if he does switch them he will definately have to reactivate both of them, if it allows him to. i had a reinstallation cd with my dell 8300. and my dell was a pile of whooohooo. after numerous power supply bowups and component fries. finally it crapped out the mb. so i took it in and had a new system built using some of the componenets from the dell. drives and the processor. and i used my reinstallation cd on it. to burn a fresh copy of windows after reformat. i had to reactivate with no problems whatsoever. he should be able to do the same with his . swapping os's between the 2 puters wont be a problem just have to reactivate since components will be different between the 2 puters. thats how they get ya. if ya change too much stuff in a system , you have to reactivate. i see no problems.
