Tamanozké
Ok so my crisis is as follows. I got a 386 Enhanced laptop with DOS 6.22 on it and decided to install Windows 3.11, after I formatted the HDD. Before I formatted, everything was fine! But now when I try to open Windows, it complains about Video Initialization failing and having to run Setup again. Windows was fine during the actual Installation (which I installed Windows for VGA), like it showed all the graphics and stuff... but now it won't even start! It only shows the splash screen and crashes with that error mentioned already.BUT! I am able to run Windows 3.11 in Safe Mode. How would I set up Windows to use the same Video settings as Safe Mode, without actually having to go into Safe Mode? (I'm willing to do some dangerous File Editing just toget it working, so give me your suggestions!)---Additional Info---Company Name of Laptop - VICTORModel - 305n SX/20-Thanks! -pops-
Forgive me if this seems rude but, aren't you somewhat out of date with this setup?Windows 3.11 was current almost ten years ago. A lot of development has taken place since then such that many people in computing at present have never heard of, let alone experienced, W3.11.I am of an age at which I did use this O/S but, my memory of it now is almost non-existent. Tamanozké
I didn't ask for a history about an OS I've been using since the DOS days... just I got this Laptop for say I went on a trip, to play simple DOS games and run maybe some Windows Apps like PBrush or Wordpad. D4\/!d
... just I got this Laptop for say I went on a trip, to play simple DOS games and run maybe some Windows Apps like PBrush or Wordpad. Yeah I'm the same as you Tam. I have an old laptop with WfW3.11. Trouble is it is not portable - it's luggable. It weighs a ton. And the battery's no good either. It stays in the back of the cupboard, awaiting the day I want to use PaintBrush or WordPad. ;) Do what I should have done years ago. Ditch it! :P
Tamanozké
Ugh! Don't you people understand? DOS games!!! It's all about the classics!I hate nowaday's technology! (Although I'm caught using it right now) Nobody seems to be able to make good stuff anymore! (Windows XP in my opinion was a flop!)Anyway, I didn't come here to talk about ditching the thing... all I wanted was help, so next poster, please help and don't start trying to give me a Technology Makeover!(Besides... I don't have the money to get another good computer anyway!)
nellie2
Hi Tamanozké and welcome to Windows Forum. I'm afraid I can't help you with your problem, I started with Windows 95 and moved on from there :ninja: I'm sure that if anyone can help you then they will, we love a challenge here. No one is trying to give you a 'Technology Makeover' or tell you what do do with your system, they are just trying to be helpful.
Tamanozké
Thank you for the welcome :)Oh... I found the information on the laptop, and turns out the VGA ChipSet is a "Western Digital/Paradise WD90C10" with a Video Memory of atleast 256KB. If anyone can find that driver for me... that would be a WHOLE lot better than what I've asked before in this topic.---Additional Info---ROM access size: 16-bitVideo access size: 16-bitI/O access size: N/ABIOS Source: WESTERN DIGITAL INC.Thanks in advance! -pops-
The point of my first contribution to this thread was not to give you a history lesson but to point out that you may have difficulty obtaining advice because the O/S you want advice on is, for many people, a subject of the history books.Few people here will have experience of W3.11 and those that have, like myself, will most likely have forgotten its characteristics either from lack of use of the system or, perhaps like me, failing memory due to advancing years.Whether you hate current technology or not, the fact remains that it is here and there is no going back to what many now consider to be dinosaur systems and methods.
