Recording Freeview

Not sure if this is the correct place to post this question. Please feel free to move it.

I've posted some questions on this before but am now asking more pertinent questions, I hope. Last year I treated us to a Panasonic digital TV with built in Freeview. This has been very good. However, the quality of VHS recordings to tape have been of much lower quality and we can only record the analogue terrestrial channels. I'm sure this is because they can only be recorded via the analogue tuner in the recorder. Now I want to treat Er-in-doors to a replacement/enhancement. I would like to record the freeview channels and also be able to play DVD's - at least that's what she wants.

Would our needs be met by a DVD recorder like the Goodmans GDVD300R? I'm sure it would record the analogue channels and has Video plus. But how will it record the freeview digital channels? Would I have to acquire a separate Freeview box and would the appropriate channel have to be selected in advance?

All the hep and advice would be welcomed.

I will try and help Doug but I am no great expert.

I have a seperate Freeview box, DVD Player and VHS recorder all connected via SCART Sockets.

The main analogue aerial goes into the Freeview box and then another RF aerial joins the Freeview box to the Video Recoder and another goes from the video recorder to the TV.

Also the two are joined together with a Scart Lead and finally a Scart lead goes from the Freeview box to the TV.

The DVD Recorder can be a stand alone item connected by a Scart Lead to the S.Video scart connector on the TV.

That is how mine works and I can record one prog and watch another, terestial /freeview and vice versa.

Popeye.

Hi Doug, there should definitely be no problem in getting recordings virtually the same as an original programme. We have a Panasonic TV and VCR, and an NTL digital box. As Nellie said, we can watch one of the five free to air programmes via the old aerial, and at the same time record either another of the five, or record a digital Chanel. Alternatively, we can watch a digital Chanel while we record another Chanel via the aerial. What we cannot do is watch one digital Chanel and record a different one at the same time. To record a digital Chanel we have to set the VCR on A2, and set the digital box to the number which tunes in that Chanel. In your case, I cannot see the need for a seperate digital box, as this is built into the TV set. I hope that this isn't as clear as mud.

Andsome.

I too have been pondering the need for Doug to have a seperate box.

I wonder if his main aerial is up to the job of receiving digital or if he needs to

upgrage to a bigger wide band one?

He states that his recording on his vcr is fuzzy.

Maybe a Scart connection between vcr and telly is all that is really required.

Also to record digital you need to set your vcr to AV. Which you can only do with a scart lead.

Sorry Doug if we are confuseing you.

No not confusing me at all. My arial is in the roof which points towards the transmitter through the long length of the tiles. Didn't want to have it on the roof. I do have a booter in the arial lead up near the arial though.
