SDJ
Just discovered that a friend has the Funlove virus, downloaded a removal tool and AVG as they didnt have an antivirus! but also have a problem in that the machine wont shut down.Blue screen error everytime and only way is to turn off. Will I be lucky in that once the virus is removed it might start behaving or is it something more serious? They were receiving constant illegal ops in IE so I ran the repair and installed 6.1 that seems to have stopped themAlso (this is the last one honest!!) when booting they received the illegal op DW which im assuming was "downloadware" or something like it I cant remeber the machine is switched off at present, so I unticked this program to start in the startup within msconfig, that seems to have taken care of that, is this ok or does it need to be running? Thanks in advance
mark2
Have you removed it in safe mode?Symantec InstructionsDW I think is Dr Watson  part of windowsfunlove infects various .exe filesShut down problem could be due to the virus or just a corrupted sound file

SDJ
And so the story unfolds:-My friend is running the infernal K***a!!!!But I was under the impression that it needed the spyware to run? Will I leave her upset if by removing the DW at startup will that prevent her K***a from working? Please dont have a go at me I dont condone that program, just trying to help a friend! Thanks
mark2
It does need the spyware to run, but is likely to be the source of her virus problems. Can you not educate her on the nasties out there, and the value of an up to date A/V ?There are several spyware free p2p progs Winmx and shareza , being a couple.Does she have a firewall running or any other security software
Guest VoG™
You could get rid of KaZaa http://www.wellesley.edu/Computing/DormNet.../P2P/kazaa.html (I suggest doing this in Safe Mode). Then clear up the spyware using AdAware http://www.lavasoftusa.com and Spybot http://beam.to/spybotsdAnd get a different P2P program (Spyware-free). SDJ
Cheers you guys.I would love to educate her on the nasties, but shes fifteen and into Justin Timberlake (according to her download folder in Kazaa!) so there is probably not much hope in that. I have got her a copy of AVG running now so I think I will try to remove the virus and see how windows goes, if it still wont shut down I will reinstall suggest Kazaalite but she probably wont go with that. Ill let you knowCheers

mark2
Kazaalite and Groksterlite are both spyware-free versions of the full versions of this software. Neither of these are distributed by the software authors. They are cracks, meaning that the people distributing them violated their End User License Agreements to decompile them and remove the embedded spyware. Should we be promoting Illegal software :(The register
SDJ
Mark2I understand you entirely and be assured that I am intending on getting rid of Kazaa and not installing any alternatives I will leave it up to my friend to decide.Just out of interest I have been given a utility called KazaaBegone and was about to use it until I realised that it would remove the folder which contains all of my friends files (mainly mp3s) so I stopped and copied all of the said files into a c:\backup folder. Will the utility still delete the c:\backup files? I know this sounds silly but as paranoid as I am about working on my friends computer, I thought there may be a way the utility recognised that the files camer through Kazaa!!  May I just say thanks you very much to all of you who have helped with this touchy subject and thank the administrators for their understanding. mark2
AFAIK kazaabegone targets the Kazaa files only so the files you have backed up should be safe is there somewhere off the C:drive you could store them maybe cdr or another partition for safety? Guest northamuk
Mark, I don't think we have to worry unduly about copyright infringements we are not providing links or distributing dodgy programs. PCA provide links but ban the discussion of P2P. If we can't talk about helping people gawd help us ! :smart:
madboy33
RememberIf you remove the virus, do a registry fix as wellboot into msdos and then type scanreg/fixmadboy33

SDJ
Yeah I have recommended this site to a few people now but unfortunalty most of these people always ask me to post for them <_>I do have faith, she was so happy at how fast her machine is now, not to mention quiet as the HDD doesnt monkey around for eternity that I am sure she wont bother with a P2P program again.I even downloaded Kazaalite and put it on a cd for her and she said no and gave it straight back, I then proceeded to destroy that cd with great satisfaction, shame though I used one of my really good cdrs.
