julesz
I have just purchased a 3com USB external hard drive. If i boot up the PC - then plug it in, it works fine. But the PC will not boot with it plugged in. Just locks up with a black screen and flashing cursor. Any ideas where to look? Thanks guys
trackrat
Normally the black screen with a flashing cursor means it is waiting for a command to be typed in. For some reason it is trying to boot of the external drive instead of your C drive which might suggest the boot setting in the bios.
julesz
this is what i thought. Surely if there is no boot record it will continue on though?
trackrat
Have you had a look in device manager to see if their are any problems with the usb settings and which OS are you using.
-pops-
Do other USB devices plugged in at boot up give similar problems?Have a look in the BIOS and examine the boot sequence - this may give a clue as to what is happening.Perhaps you could try formatting the errant drive. My thinking is that the drive may not be as new as it is made out to be and there may be some residues of another O/S or other data remaining on the disc.
