houstonchu
hi, i have a cookie inside "cookies" directory of "windows". it has a logo of index but can be open (excutable) --show image of "powerdvd"--, i gues it must have something behind this program because properties shows it has activity each time i access computer. and it refuses to access, so it can not be removed.any way to delete this cookie.i am searching all files because my cable only have 58 speed. thanks.david

Zfactor
If you are referring to "index.dat" (it was not very clear from what you said) then it is put there by IE and you can not delete it while you are logged into your own account. If you have multiple accounts then you can log into somebody else's and delete it, but once you open IE it will be put there again. As far as I can tell it is simply a file placed by IE, and you can just leave it alone. houstonchu
hi, it is a "index.dat" face, and it can be right mouse clik "open" and come out a workable "powerdvd" window. i changed its file property to "archieve" and delete it, then, just as you said, it comes out again...a smaller 32k compare the one in trash can 176k...i am wondering if anything attached to it...and why its size increases...and my cable speed down...thanks david
Zfactor
Well, I did a little Google Search, and what I have come up with is the following:Index.dat are files hidden on your computer that contain all of the Web sites that you have ever visited. Every URL, and every Web page is listed there. Not only that but all of the email that has been sent or received through Outlook or Outlook Express is also being logged. The file names and locations depend on what version of Internet Explorer you have. If you are running IE version 4.0 or above, the file name is "index.dat". Microsoft has not supplied an adequate explanation as to what these files are for or why they have been hidden so well...More from this site: Click HereIndex.dat viewer (I do not vouch for this program, nor do I claim it is safe, use at your own risk): Click HereINDEX.DAT is a hidden index of the Web sites you visit and the E-mail you send. It is not deleted when you use Windows to clean out temporary Internet files and so is generally available for investigative work even if you think you have cleaned out your browsing history...More from this site: Click HereSo as I suspected the index.dat file is created by IE and will always be created when you run IE. The general consensus on the search results is that index.dat logs your url visits. You may notice it was bigger before you deleted it than after is because the more sites you visit once it is rewritten, the larger the file size.I hope this helps you, to find out more I suggest searching Google with the phrase: "What is index.dat"
houstonchu
hi, thanks for your precious imformation. i appears that index.dat does a log work...and i evetually deleted it at the first time, and no way to delete for the 2nd time...it seems to become a smarter...and most interesting is... it can generate "powerdvd" screen, that make me thought it works like a "carieer"... and this time, i change it to "read, archie" only, it quite there without expanding size...geez, hope it not relates to slow speed.david
Boris
This is a good program for cleaning all sorts of rubbish. Crap CleanerRather than change your index.dat properties to "read", "archive" only - use nellie2's application Crap Cleaner !It will automatically delete your old index.dat file every time you re-boot and replace it with a new default 32k one. This will not cause any problems at all. It's very safe as well - with its default settings.Under Options / Settings tick "automatically clean computer on boot"If there are any cookies you want to keep ? - before you run it for the first time, just go to - Options / Cookies + add them to the right hand window. houstonchu
thanks, crap cleaner real work well - replaced with a new 32k, but even the new index has the ability to open a "powerdvd", by chance, does your index.dat can open a "powerdvd", thanks.david
Zfactor
The reason it is opening with powerDVD when you double-click it is that the program associated with the .dat extension is set to powerDVD on your computer. For example: mine opens with Dell Media Experience. If you look in options for that program and check the filetypes it handles, you will see .datFor mine, it is checked under "Select the types of media you want to display"There is nothing to worry about that powerDVD opens it up, it is just that that is the program that your computer is being told to use to view it.
