As I understand it, the noise margin is basically how much louder the signal is than the background noise. Its a diag option, the higher that number, the stronger your signal.If you were in the low range then moving halogen lights away from the router and Routing the phone cable from from electrical devices and using shorter cable could help. scuzzman Posted January 3, 2005 Report Share Posted January 3, 2005 Line attenuation is essentially loss of packets/signal over x distance, where x is the number, in feet, you are from the CO. Your Noise Margins are the ratio of electronic signal mixing (line noise) in decibels, to the signal strength. The NM's should stay between 6 and 31, 6 being bare minimum, 9 is preferable. General rule of tumb is this:if you have very high attenuation (80-100), and low bitrates and low noise margins (0-6) this indicates a potential problem with one/all of the following: unfiltered device, phone line between dsl modem and jack > 14', bad filter, internal wiring grounding out, improper internal wiring, high-frequency devices (moniter, speaker, halogen lamp/light, etc) around/near modem or dsl data line. It can assist in essentially debugging an intermittent sync issue. ie: change a filter, check results, repeat.
