Tweaking/Repairing my connection

HI can you guys please help me tweak/repair my connection?

when im browsing, I have this 5 second lag between web pages. The progress bar at the right bottom corner of IE stolls as it goes from one page to the next. Im forced to hit refresh to get it going again (though not always). Sometimes the speed is super fast (especially visiting sites like Google.ca for some reason).

I have DSL (always connected) with TELUS VELOCITY in Canada. I usually download from anywhere between 40-150Kb/sec (though usually closer to 40) I believe my service provicder promised closer to 300kb/sec. Im running WINDOWS XP PRO

Here are my TCP/IP Analyzer results (after I followed all of Dr. Tweaks modification advice, which can be read by visiting this link) http://forums.speedguide.net/showthread.php?t=73799

TCP options string = 020405b40103030001010402

MTU = 1500

MTU is fully optimized for broadband.

MSS = 1460

Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which equals MSS.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 64240

RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits

Unscaled Receive Window = 64240

RWIN is a multiple of MSS

Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:

513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)

256960 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)

128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)

bandwidth * delay product (Note this is not a speed test):

Your RcvWindow limits you to: 2569.6 kbps (321.2 KBytes/s) @ 200ms

Your RcvWindow limits you to: 1027.84 kbps (128.48 KBytes/s) @ 500ms

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = OFF

Time to live left = 53 hops

TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF

Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

IP type of service field (RFC1349) = 00000000

Here are my current TCP/IP Registry settings (pulled from Cablenut console)

*note* empty does not mean zero* just blank

DefaultReceiveWindow 64240

DefaultSendWindow = empty

DisableAddressSharing = empty

InitialLargeBufferCount = empty

InitialMediumBufferCount = empty

InitialSmallBufferCount = empty

LargeBufferSize = 8192

MaxFastTransmit = empty

MediumBufferSize = 3008

PriorityBoost = empty

SmallBufferSize = 256

TransmitWorker = 32

FastSendDatagramThreshold =empty

EnableFastRouteLookup = empty

EnablePMTUDiscovery = 0

IgnorePushBitOnReceives = empty

GlobalMaxTcpWindowSize 256960

MaxFreeTcbs = empty

MaxHashTableSize = empty

MaxNormLookupMemory = empty

SackOpts = 1

SynAttackProtect = empty

Tcp1323Opts = 1

TcpLogLevel = empty

TcpMaxDupAcks = 2

TcpMaxHalfOpen = empty

TcpMaxHalfOpenRetried = empty

TcpRecvSegmentSize = empty

TcpSendSegmentSize = empty

TcpTimedWaitDelay = empty

TcpUseRFC1122UrgentPointer = 0

TcpWindowSize = 256960

MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server = 20

MaxConnectionsPerServer = 10

by the way i downloaded a file from the Roadrunner FTP site (speed test)

I jumped into the download around ~150kb/s but kept falling till i reached around 80kb/sec at the middle. Then i cancelled

Hope that helps

Im looking forward to hearing any and all advice you guys can share

thanks in advance

Have you tried using an alternative web browser?

I use Firefox as my main browser now - IE almost never gets a look-in.

Give it a go, there's nothing to lose. Firefox has the reputation of being faster than IE in any case.

umm i know about spyware pretty well . i can pretty much guarantee i have a clean comp. I was hoping you guys were familiar with DSL Connections and tweaking?????????

I believe i have a wrong tweak in place, i just need someone familiar with the above settings to guide me to reset them for optimal use (as stated above)

thanks guys

I can't know whether you're familiar with spyware or spyware removal until I ask. Thanks for clarifying.

I'm not familiar with Dr. Tweaks tweaks. If you didn't change anything on your PC, and your download speeds decreased, I'd check with the ISP. You're supposed to be guaranteed dedicated bandwidth from DSL providers, I believe, unlike cable which is more like an Ethernet LAN.

My personal view is to untweak, do an extended ping with large packets (ping -t www.cisco.com -l 200), and see how much packet loss you get. If you get packet loss, call TELUS VELOCITY.

There may be other moderators who know the tweaks. :)

that is pretty fixed between 40-150kb/sec

Telus has quoted me a max of 150kb/sec

I usually hover between 40-150 (more often closer to 40 than 150)

is this normal?

These problems could be, and most likely are, related. I'm a tier 3 network and escalations specialist for a DSL ISP, and I can tell you that your bitrates should never never fluxuate that much. Also - 40-150kbps is very very low for DSL.

persianpower,

I suspect something's bogging your PC down. Do the pages load normally after the delay, or is page loading slow too? It sounds like you know your way around a PC pretty well. Have you checked Task Manager, or used any utilities to see whether there is anything strange running, or taking up a lot of processor time when you're connected to the Internet?

You can also look in Add/Remove Programs for any suspicous programs and remove them.

Using regedit, you can go to Hkey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run, and see if there are strange programs in there.

MSCONFIG is a useful utility for turning off unneeded programs from startup. You should be able to go to Start, Run, and type in msconfig. Go to the Startup tab in the System Configuration Utility and uncheck anything you don't recognize. You can do a quick Google search for things you're unfamiliar with in there.

I get the opportunity to work on a lot of corporate and home PC's, and I always begin with antivirus and spyware removal when people describe the symptoms you have. If those don't resolve the problems, I start to scrutinize what's running. It sounds like you've already done that, but maybe another look around will help? Would you be able to post a HijackThis log?

If you feel like I'm sending you down the wrong path, please PrivateMessage or post. I'm honestly trying to help. :)
