korgg
Hello ! Here's what it happened with my network:I have a network with about 24 computers... 3 with Windows 98 SE, and the rest of them with Windows XP pro and home with SP1 and SP2 (3 of them)...The problem appeared when on all Win XP computers came sasser worm ... In that period I also changed the internet provider ... After sasser came a lot of worms and since then I keep removing them by hand (untill today when I discovered that MS spyware remover)... The problem is that some of the computers are not accesible, allthough they are corectly configured... IP: 10.0.0.2-25 , 10.0.0.1 gateway (a linux box), SN Mask 255.255.255.0 , workgroup=WORKGROUP, enabled Netbios over TCP/IP and no firewall on the network connection... I use Simple file sharing ...I can access those computers with SP2 with no problem, but I can't put SP2 on the others because there is an important program that doesn't work with SP2... OKI ! when I try to access a computer (one of the one with the problem) from My network places I get a message "Access is denied. Please contact your netwotk admin..." ... If I try to map a share from any of those computers it works, but I can't do this everytime..The users are a used to some order of their own... I tried almost everything...Searched with google, MS site, but nothing ... I disabled simple file sharing, nothing... Enabled guest account, blank passwords, same username, still nothing...When i open network places, I get a list of shares... Some of the shares belong to the computers that are with problems...(I can enter that share this way).... But some shares do not appear there... Anyway, nobody looks there..They click "View workgroup computers" and they go from there...And here it comes my problem on some of them...Since I can't reinstall windows (don't have time for this), I see myself stuck...You cant imagine that frustration I get when someone says "The network doesn't work. Fix it ! "...If you have some ideeas, please let me know ! Thank you !
korgg
Sorry if this is not the place for this post ... I just saw the networking section now ...

scuzzman
Have your tried removing SP2 to see if that solves ya? It's the only thing I can think would be causing this...
homecomputeraid
Do you have centralized Antivirus, or Antivirus of some kind running on all machines? Are you aware that peer-to-peer networking with Windows is only recommended for a max. of 10 to 12 computers? Any chance of getting some kind of server/domain setup? You really need a server to administer a network of that size effectively. You may want to consider running a sniffer like Ethereal (remember to install WINPCAP first) to see what's going on. korgg
The network worked like a charm before sasser event ... I have ethereal installed and runing (great tool)... I also have Antivirus software on each machine...Maybe my post was a little confusing, but my problem is quite the same as MonicaX and others...The answer was: call MS ..Well, I cant do that...And I have seen that on MS site before I posted here...And I also cant install a server or do some time consuming operations...And win xp with SP2 works quite well ... No problem there ...Just those with SP1 ...
homecomputeraid
Are the XP SP1 machines having problems communicating only with XP SP2 computers?
korgg
The SP1 machines (some of them) can comunicate with SP2 ones and win98se ones ... Vicecersa no ...
korgg
Oki ! I have upgraded the win xp sp1 to sp2 on one of the machines that couldn't be accessed...It didn't work... I installed a clean Win xp sp2 on that machine and it works ...Oki ! Now a possible explanation...Maybe there is a limited number of simultaneous connections to a machine...Why I say this ? When I run "netstat -a" I see some establisehd TCP connections to some computers on the network (some of them I cant access...the problem :) ) and also a few time_wait TCP connections. As I said before , all systems are clean of spyware.... I guess that the OS reached the maximum number of connections and it doeasn't allow me to enter further...:(
homecomputeraid
Korgg,If you suspect the problem from MonicaX's post, why can't you call Microsoft for free? Here's the KB article again: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=841399.The server idea isn't a short term fix, and may not even help with this problem, but for a network your size, I strongly recommend migrating to some authenticated domain type system with servers. korgg
The reason that I cant call MS is that I dont live in the same country as you...The server ideea is not bad and it is in my head for some time ... But Win xp HE cant join a domain and most of my licenses are HE's.
homecomputeraid
Yes, Home Edition is designed with small peer-to-peer networks in mind. You'll have to upgrade to XP Pro whenever you go to a domain infrastructore with a server.
korgg
Ok! I realized this ... Come on people. Give some ideeas... So please get on-topic ! ;) off-topic:And why can't I edit my posts ? I made a lot of mistakes and I would want to corect them ....

homecomputeraid
Ok, the on-topic question to me is whether you can find a way to get all of your PC's on Service Pack 2. When you use Ethereal, what kind of traffic do you see when one of the XP SP1 PC's tries unsuccessfully to connect?
korgg
Yeap...I forgot about that ... I shall try it today ...
korgg
And here it is an ethereal buffer save attached...Computer who wants access is at 10.0.0.4 and the accessed computer is at 10.0.0.5 (the one with the problem )...Save locally and open with ethereal ...Damn...Upload failed...You are not permitted to upload a file with that file extension. Later edit :)Logon attempt by: MICROSOFT_AUTHENTICATION_PACKAGE_V1_0 Logon account: Guest Source Workstation: VALI Error Code: 0x0Security audit says success :( ...ethereal.zip
homecomputeraid
I'm looking at the Ethereal file. Thanks for uploading it. I'm also looking into the max. connections permitted on XP Home shares.
homecomputeraid
Quick search for xp home maximum connections brought up the following article: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=815432. I don't think it's the one for us, but worth a look.
homecomputeraid
Not confirmed yet, but it looks like XP may have a maximum of 10 concurrent connections? Even though this worked for you before Sasser, I want to reiterate that you're well beyond Microsoft's recommended maximum for peer-to-peer networking. I'm trying to help you out though. :)
korgg
Later edit :)Logon attempt by: MICROSOFT_AUTHENTICATION_PACKAGE_V1_0 Logon account:Â Guest Source Workstation: VALI Error Code: 0x0Security audit says success :( ...What I wanted to point here is that security audit for a request to access a machine is succesfull, allthough the errror message still appears...VALI(10.0.0.4) tries to connect to 10.0.0.5 (IOANA) ...I was just curious what the audit would say ...And about the maximum concurrent connections I think is 10 on Win XP HE ... Just crossed my eyes these days somewhere...OK! ... Now the question: How to get rid of zombie connections ? I might want to disconnect permanently mapped drives ... I'll see tomorow if it has any efect ...And how do I do it from the machine that has source share that is mapped over the network, without un-sharing that folder ? The only way that I can see what connections are made to a certain computer is "netstat -a " ... Damn I hate myself :( ..and windows xp ...But as long as I'm alive I'll keep trying to do something...The fact that the file-system is NTFS could have anything to do with it ? I'm moving to FAT32 on the computers on wich I reinstall Win XP SP2 ...What hurts me right now is that I have to reinstall Windows on a computer wich has a fax connected and a few thousands faxes saved and needed... And i can't save them all at once but one at a time :o . And there is the freaking Outlook 2003 with his very consistent contacts list ... This one I can do with an export...And it works ...Another ideea... The Linux server might have on and a Wins server wich might be crashed and in this case there shouldn't be any Master Browser elections on the network...But they are ! .. Hope I'll remember tomorrow to call my ISP and ask him about that ...
