I usually start by pinging the Gateway then out. If you can reach your Gateway, then ping the outside IP of the Router, then your ISP's Router. If you can ping to the inside IP of the Router, and the outside IP of the Router, but can't browse the Internet, it's an ISP problem.

You can also make sure name resolution is working on the network by pinging a web address like www.cisco.com and making sure it resolves to the IP, and the pings go out.

Name resolution problems could be ISP related, but are more likely something on your network.

Sorry Andy, I was picturing a larger corporate network. :)

If he has a Wireless Firewall/Router, that should receive the DNS information from your ISP, and distribute that to the computers that connect to it. You might try unplugging your cable modem, unplugging the router, plugging the cable modem in, waiting until it is fully up, then plugging the router in to refresh the DNS information.

Do you know how to get into the Router's management page to check it out?

Andy,

I suspect your Internet Service Provider changed something with DNS. Contact the ISP and find out the Primary and Secondary DNS Servers. Make sure those are in your router. Please post the manufacturer and model of the Router so we can help you find the information if you need help.

Sincerely,

You can download the manual for the Router thing here:

http://www.voyager.bt.com/2100/downloads.htm

To get to the router configuration, you open a browser like Internet Explorer or Firefox, and browse to the router's inside IP (most likely 192.168.10.1). Login to the window that pops up (probably admin for username, and admin for password unless you changed it).

Look on the Status, Overview page and write down the Primary and Secondary DNS Server information. That's the information you will ask your ISP about. Ask them if the DNS server addresses are right.

It seems like DNS server information would be passed to the internal computers using DHCP by default, but if it's not already set up, here's what the manual says to check:

DNS Server

The DNS server address will be passed to the DHCP clients along with the IP address. The DHCP clients use the DNS to map a domain name to its corresponding IP address.

To enable the DNS Server:

Tick the Enable automatic assigned DNS

Click Apply

Restart your BT Voyager Router. How to restart...

Another way to test to see whether the router is a problem is to connect the PC directly to the Cable or ISDN Modem. Reboot the PC and the Cable Modem and see whether the PC can get to the Internet.

Has this ever worked, or is it a new setup?

Sorry this is taking several days for us to help you resolve Andy!

Does your Voyager BT Router plug into another device (cable or DSL modem) to get to the Internet, or is the Voyager BT Router the only device you can plug into to get to the Internet?

Is it PC ---> Voyager BT Router ---> Cable Modem ---> Internet?
