awake
Strange one this ...Installed a wireless usb keyboard/mouse set on an xp home pc, but windows reboots just before the welcome screen UNLESS a standard ps/2 keyboard is plugged in the normal keyboard port. I've tried uninstalling the standard keyboadr via control panel\keyboard with no luck. With a ps/2 keyboard plugged in, windows starts fine and the wireless mouse & keyboard work fine (as well as the standard keyboard plugged in the ps/2 port).BUT, disconnect the ps/2 keyboard and xp goes into a never ending reboot cycle just after the initial Windows XP screen. XP is updated to SP2.Any ideas befoer I call the witch-doctor in ?!
madboy33
can you not plug it into the mouse and keyboard ports?I bought a wireless mouse and keyboard and they had connectors that came with it that attached to the USB, just in case something like this happens
scuzzman
I would go with a USB-PS/2 converter and see if that does it...
-pops-
I agree with the above advice. Why use one of your precious USB ports when you have PS/2 ports available which are useless for anything else but a keyboard and a mouse? madboy33
could not remember the name of the PS2 port.............LOL

I despise USB...Whatever your views on USB, right or wrong, you must agree surely that USB has greatly improved the versatility of the PC by enabling a huge range of peripheral devices to to "hot-swapped" - without the hassle of shutting down and rebooting at each change and allowing a large number of peripherals to be attached at the same time. The introduction of USB 2 has made conventional serial and parallel port connections painfully slow and pretty much redundant.
scuzzman
While this is true - USB support is better in Europe than in the states. Also, remember I run Linux, and while the kernel is hot-swappable, USB support isn't what it should be because hardware manufacturers Don't write their own Linux drivers orDon't provide enough specs on their hardware so we (open-source developers) can write themSo this bitters me a little when it comes to USB. I also don't care for the wy it was kludged into Win98/98se/Me. When USB became widely available, it wasn't until Win2k, even though it was being put into computers with Win98/98se preinstalled. I think it has the potential to be an excellent interface, they just implememnted it incorrectly and it needs to be taken more seriously. This is all aside from teh inherent HUGE security risk... but that's another story for another time...

awake
Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I had thought about using an adaptor, but I've setup usb wireless sets on other PC's that haven't needed anything plugged into the ps/2 ports. Maybe the motherboard is a bit fussy ?!Anyways, adaptor in the ps/2 port it is !Thanks again ...
scuzzman
I'm betting that's it...In any event, most people are like -pops- and quite fond of USB, and don't want these ports taken by somehting that can be plugged in somewhere else. I would reccomend an adapter. Anyone here will tell you my opinions are strange and often without logical basis, but I'll stick by them lol... -pops-
Do you have USB enabled in the BIOS?USB is a Windows function and it used to be that it couldn't operate before Windows had loaded. Modern motherboards are able to use USB from the BIOS and it may be that this is not enabled. Worth a check out :)
awake
Thanks for the last comment pops. Think I already checkde it, but will look again.Using a usb -> ps/2 adaptor didn't work. Got the same result.
-pops-
This is strange. I've done a number of these and never had any problems. There is one point though. With mine, if the wireless receiver can't "see" the keyboard or mouse when it is booting up then I get a keyboard error message from the BIOS at the start of the boot. Oddly the message states something like "no keyboard detected, press any key to continue." There is something seriously wrong in the logic of that messageWhat is the setup? Make of motherboard and keyboard/mouse?
awake
Don't have the machine right in front of me so don't have mobo details to hand. There's no error at startup with the wireless stuff att'd. But windows blue screens before the signon screen. Most odd.As per pops' comments, I'll check the bios settings for usb. There's the bios setting for usb dos support, which I'm assuming is only needed for dos applications and doesn't need to be set in order for the usb ports to be 'seen' at boot up ?Either way, windows shouldn't blue screen & reboot with this. At worst I'd have thought it would complain about not having a keyboard.
