msconfig Startup section items

Recommended Posts

I had an item in the msconfig Startup section that no longer exists, so I had it unchecked, and set the General section to Selective startup. I didn't want to reboot with that selective setting anymore, and I wanted to get rid of that item.

I know that uninstall should have taken care of this, but that was some software that didn't provide any way to uninstall. So I searched the regisitry and found various places - including services - where that thing appeared. I deleted each and all of them, and everything seems fine now.

However, I wonder if there are more appropriate ways to remove such items. I'm sure not everybody is comfortable to go and delete various keys from the registry.

Thanks for the RegScrubXP pointer. I haven't used any reg cleaners for many years, as I made some very bad experiences with Microsoft's original Regcleaner.

But I noticed that RegScrubXP hasn't been updated for more than 2 years, which means it is pretty stable. So I gave it a shot (after a full registry backup). It removed 77 items, and I don't seem to have any problems.

Now back to work...
