3 Months later - still can't network pc's

:( Hi there,

Its been 3 months since I first tried to network my pc's, using a wireless Belkin router, then my current Linksy wired router. I am sick and tired of trying to figure it out. I've tried using the 3 part plan, kindly offered by homecomputeraid. Unfortunately, some of the tabs suggested to click, simply weren't even on my computer. Therefore, no way hombre. I AM ABOUT TO GIVE UP. I know its a bit melodramatic, but are these technologies put here simply to totally frustrate, annoy, irritate and confound me?? I think so. I am feeling very sorry for my networkingless self.

Signing out and feeling very embarassed about my uselessness.

 Ok, here goes. I have two pc's running windows xp home edition version 2002 with service pack 2. The router is a Linksy cable dsl router Model no BEFSR41-UK. The current broadband modem is a Motorolla Surfboard SB5100, running on a USB connection. I have Blueyonder broadband. I currently have Norton internet security professional.

I followed the cd rom supplied with the Linksy router and the Windows Network wizard, but neither ultimately completed the set up. I managed to get the computers to recognise each other (I think!), but cannot establish an internet connection. Also, when the router is connected to both computers, neither computer will go on-line. Very strange!!

I don't actually know which stage I am at with this whole thing, because, to be honest I am lost!!

A starting from scratch and going through the whole ABC's are probably gonna be my only hope.

Ladydeb, I have BlueYonder BB and 2 pc's networked via a hub.....networking was simplicity itself.....XP did all the work to be honest.

In my opinion it's your Norton firewall causing a problem, try turning it off.

There's nothing Norton on any of my machines, and there never will be.

OK - Networking basics:

1) Both computers require a Network Interface Card (ethernet card) - If you haven't got this, visit your local computer store and pick up an NIC for about $10 USD, and install it (very simple)

2) Run an ethernet cable from the cable modem, to the "Internet" or "WAN" port on the router

3) Run ethernet from port "1" on the router to your computer's NIC, and the same with port "2" on the router and the second computer

This should solve the problem.

Hi there,

I tried the cable connection suggestions that were made and I can now access the internet with the main computer. However, I still can't go on-line with the second computer.

I clicked 'VIEW WORKGROUP COMPUTERS' and was given this message:

MS HOME IS NOT ACCESSIBLE. YOU MIGHT NOT HAVE PERMISSIONS TO USE THIS NETWORK RESOURCE. CONTACT THE ADMINISTRATOR OF THIS SERVER TO FIND OUT IF YOU HAVE ACCESS PERMISSIONS. THE LIST OF SERVERS FOR THIS WORKGROUP IS NOT CURRENTLY AVAILABLE.

However, on the second computer, when I click the same tab, it shows the second computer as part of a workgroup, but not the main computer.

Anyone figure this out???

Any help greatly appreciated, cos I feel as if I have shuffled a step closer to the solution and it feels GOOOODD!!!!

LADYDEB

P.S. I tried turning off Norton firewall, but it seemed to make no difference?!

Well, let's first get that computer online, then we'll deal with the filesharing issue.

You say you have a linksys router?

Follow this and post the information:

  • Go to Start->Run adn type this in
    cmd

  • You'll come to a command prompt, type this:
    ipconfig /all > C:\netinfo.txt

  • Press "Enter", then type this:
    ping 192.168.1.1 >> C:\netinfo.txt

Make sure to have 2 ">"'s on the second command

  • Now, type this
    notepad C:\netinfo.txt

  • Copy and paste that info here please.

Found our problem :D

Follow this list:

  • Go to Start->Control Panel
  • Choose "Network and Internet Connections"
    - You may just see Network Connections, if so, Click that
  • If you did see "Network and Internet Connections", now choose "Network Connections" under "Or choose a control Panel Icon"
  • Find "Local Area Connection" and right-click it
  • Select "Properties"
  • Highlight, but do not uncheck "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and click the "Properties" button just underneath
  • You'll then see a series of options, place the "dot" in these 2:
    - Obtain an IP Address automatically
    - Obtain a DNS server address automatically

That should do it.

Hi there SCUZZMAN

I followed all the instructions you gave, but still, things just aren't happening. I tried 'view workgroups'again, but the same applies as before. No workgroup computer on main computer and only the 2nd computer showing up on the 2nd computer.

I'M SO FRUSTRATED!! And you have been very patient with me.

Many thanks for all you've done so far!

LADYDEB

p.s. Is it possible that the two computers aren't actually in the same workgroup??

We'll work on the networking issue in a few... right now, let's get that computer online (the issues most likely aren't related. Now that we have the computer set up for DHCP - let's do this once more:

Hi Scuzzman,

Despite your valiant attempts to help. I am still networkless.

Don't know what happened but I couldn't get on-line after the last attempts to configure the network. I have had to unplug the router altogether to get back on-line. Its dawned on me that when you use the set up wizard on the main computer, it invites you to make a set-up floppy disk in order to configure the second computer. However, the second computer doesn't have a floppy drive. Is this process only necessary when both computer do NOT have Windows XP as the running system??

I don't know. I was soooo full of hope that I could sort this out. :(

Could the router be faulty??

Regards and many thanks

Probably its not the router... just a few botched settings.

So we can verify a few things, please do this again.

Hi SCUZZMAN,

When the broadband modem was installed by Blueyonder, I believe they did connect using a usb cable. As I REALLY don't know what I'm talking about, I had no clue that this could be a problem. How do I change the need for the usb cable? Can I alter this somehow and make the set up work??

 I am, to all intents and (computer) purposes, clueless.

My limited dabbling has given me a fragmented knowledge, but this networking thing eludes me.

Does the broadband have to be reconfigured by Blueyonder? Or is it just a case of changing a cable?

Your input is greatly appreciated SCUZZMAN. :D

Well, typically it's just changing a cable.

Take a look at the back of the modem, and tell me if there is what appears to be an oversized phone jack. If so, great. If not, Blueyonder needs to send you an "ethernet capable modem".

Now look at the back of your computer. Tell me if there is a jack the exact same size. Don't confuse this with a dial-up modem - it will not be in a pair. If there's not, we need to install an ethernet card. If so, we're in good shape. I'll post more when you respond.
