Nope, I can only go on-line if the usb is plugged back in.

What are the above??

Strands of hair I've pulled out!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am sorry SCUZZMAN this damned machine is sooooooooooo frustrating.

I feel like I'm wasting your time.

The second machine goes through detecting proxy settings and tries to open google, but then says this page is not available.

The first machine won't go on-line without the usb plugged into the broadband modem. :o

That's OK - we can work with this.

Now, your comptuer and router are communicating, we need to assure the router is communicating with the modem.

We want to access the rotuer config by doing this:

  • Open Internet Explorer
  • Go up to Tools->Internet Options, Connections Tab
  • Click "LAN Settings" - untick everything and click OK
  • Click OK on the Internet Options dialog
  • Go to the address bar and enter
    http://192.168.1.1

This will be the router setup. If you're prompted with a username and password, leave the username blank, and the password is: admin

On the left is a list of options, one of which says "Internet connection type". Be sure this is set to "Obtain IP Automatically" and if it's not, change it.

Click "Status" at the top, this will bring you to your connection summary.

Find the "Internet" or "WAN" section, and record all information.

Post that here.

Ok SUZZMAN,

Just for verification purposes, did you want me to type the http address into the main IE address bar, I assumed this was so as I couldn't see any other.

I did this and after several attempts, a big red warning screen came up saying:

401 AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.

Server coul not verify authorized access............ etc.

The screen which appeared was, I believe, a hotmail screen, which gave me a list of 5 possible hotmail e-mail addresses as passwords. These all belong to my son and his friends.

Should I try again using these e-mails one by one, hoping that one of them may work.

Regards

OK - just a few pointers to keep you outta trouble:

1) That procedure we did with the powering down and bringing back up is called a "powercycle" - repeat that if you have trouble connecting in the future

2) Do NOT hook that USB cord back up - ethernet is much more stable, and will prevent these types of troubles

3) If you need anything more - we're here for ya :)

Now tell me, do you need help setting up file sharing between the PC's?

Hi SCUZZMAN!

Your generosity knows no bounds!!

The only thing that I'd really like to share between the two computers is being able to send images/text for printing purposes as we only have the one printer, which is hooked up to the main computer. Also maybe, can the internet favourites list be shared in some way??

Thanks again SCUZZMAN. :flowers:

Hi again SCUZZMAN,

I can't find NETWORK NEIGHBOUR.

So, I think, what I'm gonna do is......... buy another printer.

It'll be just as easy as anything else and they're not terribly expensive, and, I've taken up enough of your valuable time.

If there was ever, and I mean this, ever, anything I could do to repay you for all your help, you just let me know! (Yeah, I realise what I know about all this would leave lotsa space on a postage stamp, but anything you can think of, don't hesistate!!)

Take very good care SCUZZMAN. :P

See you around the forum maybe.
