lemonx
I'm trying to install windows on my computer. When I boot from the installation disk there is a message... "Windows is now checking your hardware" - or something like this, and then the screen becomes blank and hangs. I believe that the problem is that i already have installed linux on my computer, although i successfuly installed msdos on it. If msdos can detect the partition where it needs to install why can't an extremely expensive os, developed by many "experts", do the same thing? I have to mention that i it is not the first time that i install windows on my computer and i never had this problem before. The only thing that changed is the partition table, but then again... windows is made by "experts", it should be beter than msdos, so it should detect the partition where it needs to install. I would apreciate any ideea about what is the problem and how to install windows without modifying the partition table or any major changes to the data on the hard drive. nellie2
This may sound a bit daft... but you have formatted the partition haven't you? I don't know much about duel booting Windows and Linux but something tells me that Windows likes to be on the hard disk first... perhaps someone else could clarify that

Cpt James T. Kirk
you could have windows installed on the hd and have a copy of linux in a seperate partition from windows and when booting up it is supposed to ask which os do you want to boot up. there is also a linux on a cd that will boot up when placed in the cd drive that does not interfere with windows. put the cd in and reboot and linux will boot off the cd. seen it on the screen savers. havent tried it myself, cuz i dont want to. but i know its supposed to work. lemonx
Cpt James T. Kirk i already have linux on a separate partition. That is why i have this much headache. About bootable linux... There is Knoppix and many distributions that have live CD's. The point is to keep my current installation. Windows has a secondary role on my computer. I use it only because of Dreamweaver and to play games.I finaly managed to install windows. I didn't do anything really. This morning i rebooted and shut down the computer 5 or 6 times and it didn't work. Now I tried again and it worked. Possibly the computer was surounded by negative energy at that time....About installing windows first and then linux... it's not really necessary. Sure it simplifies things a lot... nellie2
Oh thanks for letting us know... I'll have to remember that one! Pure positive thoughts and windows will install!  :throw:
scuzzman
Just a little more info on this:It's not neccessary per se to install Windows first, but be prepared to reconfigure LILO/GRUB. Windows must think it's on the primary partition though, you can do this by remapping the partitions with GRUB/LILO at boot-time.My advise is always to install Windows first, but sometimes it's not possible. Cpt James T. Kirk
Cpt James T. Kirk i already have linux on a separate partition. That is why i have this much headache. well what i was gettin at is kinda what scuzzman said. windows has to see its the primary and linux the secondary. and in my opinion its better to have windows installed first then linux in different partition. thats all i was gettin at here.
