Jayno Posted February 13, 2005 Report Share Posted February 13, 2005 I just downloaded a driver update for my green manta ray (! Alcatel ADSL Modem) but it came in a winzip folder. When I click on 'Extract' in winzip it seems to want to put in ' C:\WINNT\System32\dllcache ' . -pops- Posted February 13, 2005 Report Share Posted February 13, 2005 I did use this modem some time ago and I remember that the updates then were self- installing.However, my point is: do you need to update your drivers? If the thing is working correctly, I would leave well alone. If the modem was supplied by your ISP, it could be that it doesn't use the standard Thompson drivers but the software of the ISP instead.You can cause much anguish, pain and misery by mucking about with things that don't need mucking about with, finding that they don't work and then, worse, seem impossible to get to work again.(If you think I'm contradicting myself about not updating with what I wrote initially, it's because I was swapping machines so I needed to install new software anyway. I did still need to install the BT software as well to get it going properly).Thanks pops/powerless - the driver update IS from Thompson, though I was led to it by ' http://www.drivershq.com ' who have a PC/driver scan service. I am inclined to update because it is two years since I did it last, and lately it has involved (mostly) three attempts for the Alcatel dial-up window to get me on line. Very difficult to know what's best because the problem got worse yesterday morning until I couldn't get on line at all. I spent two or three hours telephoning my ISP tech support (ditto my non-ADSL ISP back-up, which didn't work either), only to find after everyone had drawn a blank that it was actually BT having an outage in north/north-west England! I'm in Sheffield. Back on now. All this makes me wonder if BT were behind the problem I've been having for the last few weeks?I think the best action - since you are all saying don't update for the sake of it - is for me to talk direct to Alcatel/Thompson tomorrow.J Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
