scan problem

Sorry, I am not clear what kind of scan you are trying to run. Checkdisk? Defragmenter?

It does sound a bit like the Win98 defragmenter. Click ALT-CTRL-DEL to start the task manager, then see if you have anything running that accesses your disk. Make sure you have no virus or spyware infection; this could be responsible for doing uncontrolled disk I/O. Run something like Ccleaner before starting to defragment to clean up your temp folders, recycle bin, and Internet caches.

WELCOME to WF. I can only agree with what has already been said, if you are running W98. I never could get a defrag or disc scan to run properly without closing everything down except explorer and systray, and disabling screen savers. I no longer run screen savers, I think they are more trouble that they are worth.

I did close programs using ctrl.alt. del., system trayand explorer i did not close but winmgmt it would not let me close it . scan disk and defrag it will not finish i ran defrag for like 8 hrs all it shows is 0 % then 1% then starts over and over. screen saver was not running either.

thanks for the response, kenarski

Are you sure you don't have any virus or spyware on your system? winmgmt.exe is a bit suspicous; although it is originally a Microsoft program, it has been known to be replaced by worms or trojans.

  1. search your C: drive for 'winmgmt.exe' and make sure you have only one copy at C:\WINDOWS\system32
  2. if above is the case, right-click on it and make sure it is really the Microsoft Management Service
  3. make sure your AntiVirus software is up-to-date, then run a full system scan
  4. make sure your AntiSpyware is up-to-date, then run a full system scan

If you think you have a virus or spyware on your system, but don't know how to remove it, follow these instructions, and post the result in this forum.

Can you right-click on winmgmtr.dll and winmgmt.exe and check their properties; are they real Microsoft modules?

Does anyone here still have Win98? If so, can you post the expected properties of these modules (e.g. size, date, version)?

i went to microsofts trouble shoot site and found the same message that i got, scan disk has started 10 times need to close some programs so it will finish sooner . i followed their resolution up to where you need to press ctrl=alt=delete to close programs it still would not close winmgmt so went to start, find msconfig and went to startup checked all the programs i did not want run on startup except systemtray. shut down computer and started it backup ran scan disk and defrag with no problem after that went back to msconfig startup rechecked the boxes , restarted the computer.
