Don't rely on one make of food. Get about three, and vary them. Tetra Min make excellent quality fish foods. Their floating flake food is a good all rounder. They also do one called Prima, but don't feed this until you have some bottom feeders, as it is designed to sink slowly, to feed fish that swim at all levels, including the bottom feeders. Wardleys are also good.

Animal House is an online supplier of a huge range of aquatic supplies, also currently running a competition for a hi tech goldfish bowl.

Nice link to a very interesting site. The only problem to my way of thinking is, that it is of course a commercial setup, designed to sell products to people. What is needed really is a completely non commercial advice site. This could be worth looking at, I have only had a quick look at present. Bear in mind that it is an American site, and as such is more heavily weighted toward salt water aquariums. These are more popular there than in the UK

Platties are quite hardy live bearers. They do like food with some green stuff in it, ask at the shop. When you asked should you introduce them now to the tank, I hope you haven't been keeping them in the bath  leave it for a while now and let the beneficial bacteria multiply. Don't forget when you add fresh water to treat it first with a chlorine remover, and get the temperature of it up to that of the water in the tank.

As I said earlier you would be well advised NOT to stock shorter lived more expensive fish until the tank has been set up for some time. Take the advice of the dealer regarding life expectancy. Several other tetras are quite long lived, I have had some glow light tetras for well over a year now. Also as I suggested get a couple of Corydorus catfish to eat up any food that falls to the bottom, any of the genus is OK.

It is algae. It is fed by the nutrient salts in the water in combination with light. You must reduce the period of artificial light by trial and error. Also you can purchase nitrate reducing salts in a bag and put the bag in a small filter fed by an air pump. These will remove nitrate down to 25 parts per million. Every week or two the bag must be removed, and soaked for a couple of hours in a solution of salt at the strength of about 100 grammes per litre. Then rinse the bag thoroughly and return it to the filter. This is in addition to a partial water change periodically. There are more permanent solutions available at a HIGH price. Buy a small white pad from the aquatic store for rubbing off the algae that has formed. DO NOT USE A GREEN ONE, as it can scratch. I have used such a pad for many years on an acrylic aquarium for many years without scratching it.
